7000 lb axle castle nut size
Im changing break assemblies and wheel bearings and seals, got the first wheel off and realized all of my large sockets are in storage. Can anyone confirm the socket needed for the castle nut on a 7000 lb axle? I measured 1-7/16", just want some confirmation before i pick up a new socket. My storage unit is about 35min from me and i dont know for sure if i have that size, ill just buy a new one. Thanks!

Sorry can't help with exact size. I just use adjustable wrench since it is not "tight."

I know its not tight, but you are supposed to torque it to 50lbs to seat the bearing and then loosen it back up.

Depends on whether you have replaced the bearing races pressed into the hub. If yes, then something like 50 ft lbs, maybe even in a couple of different wheel positions, is a good idea to make sure these races are seated. If you have not replaced these and bearing and race wear looks even, no need to go to 50 ft lbs. Just snug to where the wheel won't turn and back to where it will without any end play.

The one I used was 1-1/2". The castle nut Lippert part number is 122081 and its thread is 1-14. I vaguely remember using a Lippert drawing that showed the distance between the flats to size the socket, but for the life of me I can't find that online. You could always buy a 1-1/2 and a 1-7/16 socket and return the wrong one .

Thanks everyone, good idea on buying both sizes to be safe. I am replacing the bearings which is why i want to torque the nut and then loosen it.

Even when just repacking the bearings you want to snug the nut up pretty good a couple of times while spinning the drum. This will get out the excess grease so the bearings wouldn't be to loose after driving a little ways with the bearings being spun quite fast.

I ended up getting both sockets as suggested. Strange thing, on the wheel i measured 1-7/16", that was the correct size, the 1-1/2" was too big. On the next 2 wheels, the 1-7/16" wouldnt fit, but the 1-1/2" was perfect. Got the passenger side done today, 2 of 3 wheels with failed seals, but no grease on the brakes. I replaced all the assemblies since i already them, and i figured if i didnt, the drivers side would have contaminated brakes causing me to redo the passenger side; that's how my luck normally goes.
