    Bearing Service

A few observations after performing bearing service on over thirty axles in the last two weeks:

    1. Bearing and brakes should be serviced/inspected every 12 months, or 12,000 miles. Interesting note current LCI manual says 12 months or 36,000 miles. I understand some low mileage owners may stretch the every 12 months... Danger, Peligro, low mileage means more stationary time, more opportunity for moisture and grease breakdown.

    2. If you have axles built before mid May 2017, the seals need to be checked.

    3. Brakes are to be replaced in pairs. If the right front gets replaced because of a leaking seal, the left front brake should also be replaced regardless of condition. Don’t let your dealer replace one side only.

    4. What is the surest tip off to a bearing problem during disassembly:

    a) too much grease

    b) too little grease

    c) old grease

    d) castle/bearing retainer nut more than finger tight after removing the cotter pin or the keeper used by Dexter.

The answer is D. Almost every time a tight retainer nut was found a damaged bearing was found

No matter how tempting it may be DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. It is tempting, just a little turn with a wrench or socket and the cotter pin will fit. JUST SAY NO.

    5. The new Lippert bearing greasing process is working. It is amazing how little grease Lippert is using. The bearings are greased adequately with high quality grease. Little or no grease in the middle of the hub between the inner and outer bearings.

    6. Dexter is using high quality grease, but more than Lippert. Some quantity of grease in the open area of the hub.

    7. I wasn’t taught to pack grease into the middle of the hub with the idea the grease would move into the bearings as needed. I took apart a fair number of hubs with heavily churned and black grease in the bearings and pristine red grease in the hub right next to the bearing. That stuff doesn’t move.

    Hey Colan:

Why don't you do a video on performing bearing/break service on an RV. I need some guidance. Bet others would appreciate it, too.

    Thanks.

Colan serviced my bearings at the Indiana Rally ... even in a little rain. Good for another year. Thanks!

Item 8: I’ve used Timken seals almost exclusively since the greased brake issue started. The extra expense may not be necessary. The standard Lippert and Dexter seals appear to be working. Of the four trailers with greased brakes all had never had bearing service and were manufactured before the start of Lippert’s new process in early 2017.

If you use Timken seals the least expensive source I’ve found is CARiD.com. A little over $10 for the 412920 seal. Have a little patience when ordering. You may get partial orders on different days.

    Mike,

A table of bearings and seals by axle capacity. Note Lippert and Dexter use the same bearings and seals for each weight of axle.
