Air bags are used to help rear sag on tow vehicle when loaded. The amount of assistance is variable based on how much air pressure that one pumps into them.
You can pressurize them just like a tire or you can have an onboard compressor to pump them up. I had AirLift bags on my F-150 with an onboard compressor and wireless remote controller. I could vary pressure up to 55 psi when needed to level the truck when towing and reduce the pressure to 5 psi when not towing.

GoHawks,
I tow a 2600RB with a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4....5.3L with a 3.42:1 final drives. I use the Equalizer 10K hitch where the tongue weight is at around 14%.
I have no issues towing this trailer and have towed in the PA mountains at 65MPH. Fuel economy ran from 9 in PA to 10.6 in the flatlands of Ohio and Michigan while burning 89 octane fuel. My trailer is within the recommended load limits (CAT Scale) where we have not encountered any sway or control issues. The only option that would have been nice (bought the truck first) would be the 6.2L engine only because the FE is about the same where the benefit of more torque could come in handy out west or in the south east.
My half ton truck is my daily driver where based on my towing the 2600RB for around 1500 miles so far, I will stick with this size truck. One item that I may purchase as a luxury item but not a necessity is an air bag system on the rear axle to handle those rare conditions where the road is sinusoidal in nature. Being able to add air to the rear suspension would allow one to handle any road conditions in comfort.
