We did it 2014. Had great time! Research the Alaskan caravans, they all stop at the same places and do the same things hint, hint. We chose not to make reservations and didn't have any problems, but we stop by 1 or 2 most days. When you get to Dawson Creek, the beginning of the Alaskan Hwy, make friends in the campground and trade phone numbers. You will be traveling with those people across AK and camping with them most nights, so you might as well hookup and trade notes. We still talk to our impromptu traveling companions. For the most part there's one way in and out unless you go north to Dawson City. There's a big circle starting at Tok going to Fairbanks and around to Anchorage back through Glen Allen and back to Tok. Some people do it clockwise and some people do it counter clockwise. From that loop you drop down to the Kenia peninsula (Homer) and then drop down to Valdez. To us, the trip to Valdez is the prettiest in AK, so don't miss that. I left out many cities but if you look on the map you'll get a general idea.

    Hope that helps.

Canada has fewer people in it especially Yukon, that's where you will see a ton of wildlife. As someone said be vary alert to moose, they are not afraid of you and will attack if they feel threatened.

Also saw lots of bear..grizzly and black, in British Columbia which we thought was some of the most incredible scenery you’ll likely find! Red is absolutely correct about seeing new friends time and again. Just take the frost heaves in the Yukon and in Alaska seriously as they can ruin your day. When we were there in 2016 the worst stretch was Glen Allen to Tok. Came back down the west side of BC to Washington. That’s a pretty good road and scenery was breathtaking. Trip of a lifetime!! I’m jealous! Have a great time!

Went there this summer. Best scenery was Top of the World Hwy., Muncho Lake, and Icefields Parkway. These are all in Canada. I spent so much time in the Canadian Rockies that I didn't get to see much of Alaska.

Worst Roads were anywhere in the far north that had construction. That was a real mess!

Of course, I was at the other end of the spectrum on my Kawasaki KLR.

We're headed to Alaska next summer.
Attached are prospective northbound & southbound routes out of Bakersfield.
Southbound route includes ferry ride, believe it's about $2200 and will take around two days.

If you Alaska veterans could take a look and let me know your thoughts, it would be much appreciated.

Oh my...you have a great trip set up. I drove your first route when we came back from Alaska, which I thought was the most spectacular drive of the whole trip. We also flew up one year and spent the whole visit traveling SE Alaska by the ferry system. Incredible trip. We are seriously looking at making the trip again next summer...up thru Washington like you are planning. Maybe we’ll run across you. Have a great trip!!

Alaska is the ultimate RV trip.

Taking 4 young children proves you are very brave parents. Hope it goes well for you. Too bad there is not room to take a babysitter with you.

May I suggest Amazon Fire 8 tablets loaded with games? It sure keeps my wife quiet on any car trip over 5 minutes.

So we're definitely doing the Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone. What else?
