    Used Ford F250

I am looking for a used Ford F250 Diesel. I have found several but wanted to asked how many miles is too many miles? I have always owned gas powered trucks. I know that a lot of variables exist especially how the truck has been maintained, utilized etc etc. All opinions are welcomed - good or bad

No matter how many miles it has or doesn't have, I'd recommend you eliminate the problem plagued 6.0L Ford diesel trucks from your search. Repairs are frequent and expensive on that version.

Well,I guess I had one of the good 6.0L trucks. I sold my 2004 CC last year after getting 12 faithful years. It had 120K miles on it and I got 12.5K for it. I did not chip it and kept it mostly OEM with synthetic oil changes regularly. I have to admit though, the new 6.7L I now drive is in a class all by itself...

You were lucky. My son currently owns one and has spent $4500 for repairs in the last four years. He's at about 150K miles. Most Ford forums are really down on the 6.0L. The 6.7 (which I currently own) is an amazing machine. So are the old 7.3's.

Bryan, I am NOT the weight police BUT I would certainly spend the effort to look for a 1 ton rather than the 3/4 ton while you're looking. It will give you so many more options in your trailer or maybe I'm missing something.

May I ask what trailer you have or are thinking about?

Go with the F350. Ride is the same as the F250, but gives you more payload via an extra leaf spring that only gets engaged when you add enough payload to need it. Price difference between F250 & F350 should be minimal.

I've heard a lot of bad about the 6.4L as well as the 6.0L, but never owned one. I know it was popular to remove all the pollution controls and re-tune those engines to make them more reliable, get more power and get better fuel mileage. The 6.7L seems to be the best powerstroke Ford has offered since the tried and true 7.3L.

If you can find a 6.7L truck that fits your budget you will be well pleased - the engine is quiet and has tons of power. The 7.3L was a great engine and likely the most reliable PSD - issue there is to find one where the engine or truck is not over the hill. The 6.0L had issues but if you can buy it right it can be "bullet proofed" by someone who knows his or her stuff and it can be a half million mile engine. The 6.4L was short lived (three model years) and was littered with issues - might avoid that one altogether. Check the website http://powerstrokehelp.com/ for this guy in Georgia he knows his stuff when it comes to PSD. I agree to go one-ton if you can find one set up the way you want. Good luck on your search!

Paul - we currently have a '17 2800BH bumper pull. Our tow trunk is a F150. At times the tach likes to sit due North especially on inclines. We are within weight limits but are certainly pushing the upper end. For now we are happy with the RV but I see a 5th wheel in my future at some point. You made a great suggestion as to whether to purchase a 3/4 vs a 1 ton. I don't see a big cost difference. I think where I am most confused now is that with used diesels I am seeing that most of the owners have made emission modifications. I certainly don't want a money pit .

I sure understand. I think, if you have some time and are persistent, you will find one with a good service record.

BTW, add your info to a signature line so we can all see what you have so our answers are more specific!

    Good luck
