'17 Durango 5.7L V8 Hemi with a 2670MK
Hello all,
I'll keep it short and sweet.. I have a '17 Durango with a towing capacity of 7,200lbs. The RV dealer says I can pull the 2670MK (6,561lbs) without issue. I would be travelling light.. not doing any boondocking (so i'd have empty tanks) and can't really see my belongings taking up too much weight (i travel alone and live fairly simple).
What are your thoughts? I'd be purchasing it with a brake controller and load balancing bars but this is my first time towing something this big and I really don't want to be in a bad situation.
Thanks for your help!

649 pounds is way too close, just because it says 7200 pounds doesn't mean you should tow 7200 pounds, I wouldn't go more than 6200 pounds and even that's pushing it it's definitely going to make your transmission work.

I ran a 2006 Durango for almost 10 years pulling a 5500lb trailer. I had 7200lb capacity too. That engine "worked" up and down the hills... You must run weight distribution to get the 7200. At 5500 it was 2 handed (sometimes 2 fisted/white knuckled) driving. Trucks blew me around. I wouldn't pull something at is only 600lbs under limit before loading...

Yeah.. I had a feeling this was pushing it, glad I came here and got some real non salesperson feedback.
I think I'm gonna drop down to the 2150RB which still seems like im looking at 2 handed white knuckled driving!

Get a good weight distribution setup. It will help a lot. Mine was a Reese "pro series" which is their economy brand. Spend the money on a good hookup.

Oh, don't know if it is offered anymore but they used to offer a higher geared rear end on the Durango that upped the capacity to 9k

Nah I don't have the higher geared durango unfortunately.
I asked the dealer to throw in the brakes and weight distribution, this is what they had on the spec sheet:
Prodigy Brake
750# Blue Ox Sway
Now if I go down to the 2150RB I imagine they would use a lower tongue weight model of Blue Ox Sway. Are those brands decent?Last edited by remset; 08-02-2017 at 06:02 PM.

Prodigy are great controllers and blue ox has a very good name out there. For a 2760 that has a max weight of 850 lbs (tongue estimated at 10%) the 750 is too small. It would be just right for the 2150. The next step down goes to 550lb tongue weight which would be too small. At least in my opinion.
