    Tom Petty

Crazy we lost another rock icon Monday. He wrote the soundtrack for many of my road trips!

I just saw him in concert in July. I had not seen him live prior to that. He was great. He was very, very gracious and kind. After pretty much each song, Tom Petty came to the front of the stage and said something along the lines of, "Wow. Thank you very, very much." He wasn't particularly polished or deep in his comments - but he seemed very genuine and sweet. You wouldn't know that he was a star, he acted more like an appreciative friend that had the opportunity to play music for you in the back yard. It was obvious that he really appreciated the reaction of the crowd. I'm glad I got to see him in person. He's gone too soon.

I met him in the 90s when my family and I went to a concert of his at the Hollywood Bowl, and had the opportunity to meet him before the show. He was an incredibly gracious and genuinely nice man, and was extremely kind to my son who was probably his biggest fan ever. As it happened, we ended up sitting not far from his family, and it was a thrill to see how excited they were to watch him on stage. It's somehow fitting to me that his last show was also at the Hollywood Bowl last week. A huge loss.

Sad. So sad. He did a lot of great songs.
I was in the Navy in 76 and one of my shipmates was really into music. Tom Petty's first album came out and CH said buy that album (we were buying 1 or 2 albums each payday). It was great times back then. I had just came back from a Pacific cruise and had purchased a massive stereo while I was in Japan at PX ($4000.00 stereo for about $900.00).

I remember him doing "Won't Back Down" for the 9-11 telethon and brought a couple of tears to my eye.
