I use both my Ford NAV and Google Maps. Both make mistakes that will lead you down dirt roads, miss your turn by three blocks, etc. By putting my route in both I see if they agree on the route- if not I investigate farther and make my decision.
The main advantage of Google Maps is I select my routes while on my home computer. There I can drag the route to roads that I want to drive on. I then send that route to my phone. Once in the truck I can use Android Auto and view it on the truck's Nav screen.
The main disadvantage to Ford NAV is that you can't easily change a route

I do it all of the time. It's called Android Auto. I think Apple has it too. Doesn't your '17 Dodge have this feature? Ford has had it for a couple of years now

Dodge has had it for several years as well....

Yes but does Android Auto warn you a head of time about low bridges and narrow roads?

No but neither does Ford NAV. I also have a Garmin 760 that does do the warning but i found it hard to use.

Most of the Garmin units that I buy allow for custom routes to be created on my computer then loaded to the GPS. I almost always run custom routes rather than letting the gps decide. This has worked out great for motorcycle touring that we've done over the years. I do the same for car trips. Doing this makes it easy to bypass towns if wanted or mix up interstate and back roads as desired. Working on the computer make routing easier and lets you check it for problems before you are on the road and committed to something that might not be right for your trip.
I do the same as you. In the past I used to use Map Source till Garmin stopped supporting it and switched to Base Camp from Garmin. I bought a 770 RV. After trying to download maps from Base Camp I finally called Garmin support. After a lot of working with them and them trying to help we figured out that every time I tried to download a map it would time out and the unit would reboot and no maps. Then Garmin support reported that they have had problems with the 770 being able to download maps to it.

I returned the 770 and ordered the 660RV and this one allows me to download the routes I want to take.

I don't always like where the Garmin wants me to go and so I will continue to make routes on the computer and then download them to the GPS.

I have also been using Garmin since the days of the old Street model, don't remember exact model but it only had a screen size of about 2" and the unit was triangle shaped and small fold up antenna. Seems like just yesrterday.

Google maps are ok as long as you have cell service. There are plenty of places were you can lose cell service.

Google does have an option to offline load maps but I havent tried it yet.

I use it quite a bit. Really a necessary step for a lot of travel spots.
