Do you leave the gas on?

    Here's another newbie question.
I have read that it is not good to travel with the gas water heater on.

What about the fridge? Is it ok to leave the gas on and the fridge on?

You just had to go there didn't you?

Actually, this is one of the most hotly contested debates in RV circles. There is no middle of the road on this topic. People have very firm beliefs on which method is correct. It's been debated on this forum several times in the past. I actually did a study to see how food was affected in very warm climates when the refrigerator was turned off. Here is a link to that study:

There are some instances where running with the propane on is against the law. This pertains to places like some tunnels and ferries. In addition, it's a good idea to shut the propane down along with any appliances when you are refueling.

Personally, if it's a very warm day (80+) and the travel time exceeds three hours, I leave the refrigerator on. If it's a cool day, I usually move some frozen items or ice into the refrigerator compartment and leave it off. The water heater will heat up quite quickly when I reach my destination, so I never leave it on.

We leave our fridge running on propane. The WH heats quickly, so we leave it off until we park at night.

Never leave the propane ON for the water heater while travelling. Without the assurance of a full tank of water you can burn out the unit and ultimately your trailer. As for the refridgerator it is fine to keep it on gas while on the move. I follow the precautions TucsonJim mentioned above.

We leave the frig on propane, water heater off while in motion. In fact, we've only used the water heater on propane twice in 26 months - and we're full-time. It stays on electric all the time.

We run the refrigerator on propane while traveling. As others have stated the water heater heats so quickly there is no need to run it while traveling. Good luck!

At the northeast rally on the fire safety session, Jay talked about if you get a tire blow out and you have the gas on , and since the gas line runs over the wheels, There is a good chance of rupturing the gas line and causing a fire

The connection to the propane tank has a built in over-flow device that will shut down propane flow if a line is cut or a fitting breaks. This is the same "shut down" that you will encounter if you open the tank valve too quickly and create an out rush of propane that the over-flow valve sees as uncontrolled flow.

It's always safer to turn the gas off. That being said, we run with the refrigerator on gas mode. I even forgot to turn the furnace off once and was surprised when we arrived and the RV was warm.

There is risk leaving the gas on. I just don't feel it's a high risk.

I run with the refrigerator on gas. Remember to turn the gas off when fueling the truck!
GD could have mitigated possible gas line damage from flat tires or road hazards by using hard lines. My Jayco Jay Feather used iron pipe.
