Mine is to the right, mostly so it is not susceptible to road debris. I also put a set screw in it, if the plastic cap sticks, or the clear elbow sticks, the twist lock gate doesn't come off.

Dallas - Good idea on the set screw. That's now on my "to do" list. I always hold the gate valve when taking off the cap, but it would be nice to not have to remember to do this. I wouldn't want the gate valve to come off when removing the cap!

They do get a little easier to take off with age. Takes time though.

Sauble59 - This site is paid for by "site sponsors" who are mostly owners of Grand Design products. As a "registered guest" you have basic access, but there is more, like pictures and attachments, that only site sponsors can access. (For the first month, you had free access to most sections) The fee is $12 US per year and primarily means that the site can run without advertising or pop-ups. If you are interested in full participation, there is a “Become a Sponsor” tab on the top bar.

I didn't mean to open up a whole can of worms over the valve position. It was just a suggestion. But maybe a poll. Who has there valve mounted to the left and who has theirs mounted to the right.

Do I get to vote twice ? I had the handle on the left and just moved it to the right based on Jim's logic.

After 30 years of RVing I had a first and very unpleasant experience last summer. All tanks were emptied but not cleaned real well as I was using it again the next week............. So I'm setting up and go to remove the cap to install the sewer hose and am surprised with pressurized black water! All I'll say is it was not something I'd like to repeat.
    A. I don't know how the black water got past the closed valve, there was only a small amount, but enough
    B. Have no idea how it got pressurized. I had not run water into any tank after emptying

I checked all valves and connections found no issues and it never happened again. But I did install the slide valve mentioned above I call it my no surprise valve and would suggest everyone get one. I also think the clear elbow is a must as well.
