Tow Vehicle - Duramax
Has anyone had this happen while towing? Ding, ding, ding, ENGINE POWER REDUCED.
We tow a 397TH with a 2015 Chevy HD3500 dually, with 46,000 total miles and around 30,000 miles towing.
Never tow especially fast, 60 to 65 typically and slower on mountain passes.
Last week towing up the grade out of Bakersfield towards Techachapi at 45, ding, ding, ding then a message, “ENGINE POWER REDUCED.”
Quick check of the gauges, everything in the green. Pull off on the shoulder as quick as I could get there.
Sit idling for a couple of minutes. Try to take off, not enough power to move. Now what? Turned engine off and restarted. Power seems normal, except the check engine light is on.
Take truck to a dealer the next morning, NTF - no trouble found. Codes indicated sticking turbo vane under high heat. Tech claims turbo is now operating correctly.
Plenty of DEF, added a jug couple of days before. Fuel filter shows 70% left. I typically change the filter at 40 - 50%.Colan and Marilyn Arnold

The dinging and reduced power is a fail safe to keep from doing severe damage to the truck. My guess is your turbo got to hot with engine as well most likely from all the data above. Do you have any EFI Live tuning or other performance things on the truck? Even stock can be pushed too hard, I installed a CTS2 monitor to monitor the true temps off my turbo, engine, transmission, and EGT's. To say the least monitoring all the data live on the dash has changed my driving habits and help me notice if something isn't right with the truck, it even gives you the ability to read trouble codes at the time of the incident for trouble shooting, think this would be a solid investment considering what potential repairs cost. I would say check your fan clutch as well but your fans are all electric, correct?
We started with a old 24ft stick and tin in 2006, then purchased our first new trailer in 2013 with an Ecplise 23SCG thinking this would be our last trailer. That was until we unexpectedly took in a family members children on top of the 3 we had, so we now have 1 biological and 4 adopted children for a total of 5 children. So here we are, just purchased a new 2018 Momentum 388M to keep our sanity with seven people and two 100 lb dogs. We like primarily dry camping in the forest but try to take the children every summer for a 2-4 week adventure showing them different parts of the country. Thanks to my job as a Paramedic Firefighter I get to spend a lot of time camping with the children throughout the year.

Everything is stock. I want longevity. Don’t need more power.
Thanks for the heads up on monitoring. Who is the manufacturer? I’m guessing it plugs into the OBDII port
One of the puzzling things is I don’t think I was pushing hard. Would be nice to know turbo and exhaust temperature.Colan and Marilyn Arnold

Colan, I had a similar experience with my 2016 when we were in Canada a few months ago but mine couldn't be reset even after disconnecting my batteries. It ended up being a clogged DPF which the dealer replaced.
BTW, I'm with you. This truck will never be messed with. It does everything it needs to do and, with this exception, perfectly. I've been the mod route and I'm done with that.Paul "Poppy" and Deb Cervone

The unit is an Edge Insight CTS2 and yes it plugs into the OBD and just suctions up in the corner of the windshield. I am really a stock man myself but did the EFI Live tuning because I was trying to get the computer to be accurate with my Titan midship tank, I drive in one of the modified modes around town which got rid of my turbo lag, but I always tow in stock. Let us know if you figure something out but the actual temps compared to my factory gauges was quite different in my 2005 Duramax.

Colan, I had a very similar incident as you a few months ago with my 2016 2500 pulling the 5'er. We had left home and were just 20 miles away on flat ground, cruising Interstate 39 north, ambient temps were in the low 70's at the time and alll seemed normal on temps. I got that same sound/message about a mile south of a weigh station, and was able to limp off and get to a parking area. While still running, I couldn't get it to pull faster than 5 MPH. After turning it off and disconnecting, like you said, performance seemed normal, but the check engine light stayed on. Since it has under 10K and under warranty, I called Chevy Customer Care and they got a tow truck out to pick us up and deliver the truck about 10 miles to the nearest Chevy dealer. It took a day or so, but a new EGT sensor was installed and everything has been fine since. I did quite a bit of research on this forum and some diesel forums. It seems that many times a problem hasn't been found that causes this.

I had something similar happen. They replaced the engine under warranty.

Same for me in Oct on a 4200 mile trip. First they replaced the turbo vane servo and when it happened again, they replaced the entire turbocharger. All under powertrain warranty with no deductible. It’s a 2014 3500 1 Ton Duramax with 60K. They need to fix something on yours, it shouldn’t do that in the conditions you describe. Good luck.
