    I-10 travel in Texas

We are taking a cross country trip starting in March from Palm Desert CA to Florida . Having never driven in Texas I wonder if going around San Antonio and Houston would save any time or aggravation, or should we just stay on I-10, trying to avoid rush hour. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Don't pass up a gas station in west Texas if you are anywhere near needing fuel!

The 1604 bypass around the North Side of San Antonio is now complete. Having traveled through San Antonio several times over the last 5 years we always dreaded it. So we got to take the whole bypass for the first time last month. We were westbound, not eastbound. But it was a welcome relief from having to go through the middle of town.

To go around Houston you have to really go out of your way. While I-10 around Houston is very congested it usually flows pretty good, rush hour traffic is the exception.

Eastbound we like to stop at Stephen F Austin State Park, then dawdle a bit in the morning, hitting the I-10 Houston corridor around 10am.

I live on the NW side of San Antonio and I don't go anywhere during rush hour as it will take twice as long to get there anyway - stop and eat a couple of tacos and wait for the traffic to die down. Loop 1604 is actually much worse than I-10 during rush hours. Rush hour traffic is 6 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 630 or 7 pm. If you can avoid those hours, you won't have any problem. I'd probably stay on I-10 but there's not much difference. Watch Waze and google maps. If you're turning Southbound to Corpus or Laredo 1604 is much better than going downtown. By the same token, if turning Northbound I avoid I-35 any time of the day. 231 North is a much better route, quicker and you're more likely to survive the trip.

In Houston just stay on I-10...it's a straight shot.... hit it between 9 & 11 am or 2 to 4 pm and you should be fine... don't fall for the beltway trick... it has the same traffic....Good Luck...

I live on the East side of Houston.

I prefer staying on I-10 through both. There's a lot of traffic on I-10 and the Loops / Outer Loops. Definitely avoid rush-hour if possible, but if you can't then just put on a good playlist and putt. I like getting behind an 18-wheeler that's going slow and not doing a lot of stopping.

If you have time - use google maps and "street view" at each interchange to determine what lane(s) to be in ahead of time.
