    Wasted bed storage

Has anyone modified the wasted space under the bed platform at the head of the bed? If so, what did you use it for and how did you do it? Or is there a reason GD left it that way?

We removed the panel at the top of the bed and installed hinges and a magnet (to hold it open). My husband uses it to store spare parts for the trailer (my husband likes to have spares for everything). There's not a whole lot of space up there, but it's usable. We don't put stuff up there that we want constant access to.

Wild guess: weight distribution? In a bed slide model avoid having extra weight in the part of the slide hanging out in the air, in a front-bed model like yours constrain weight being added directly to the pin. Maybe they use the same bed frame for both models?

This post is worth what you paid for it.

Nice job and thanks for the pictures! I might do something like that but will probably just store late season blankets to keep the weight down on the front like boyscout mentioned.

Well, as I said there's not a whole lot of room. We have the window from the front door in there (we replaced it with one that has clear glass), and the heavy comforter (for camping in January), and mostly small extra parts stuff. And that stuff would have wound up in the front (workshop) compartment anyway.

I have been thinking about hinging a full base for the mattress so that it all lifts up. I am thinking about using electric powered lifters on both sides controlled by a switch.

We thought about something like that. But it seemed too much for the little space that we'd gain by doing that. Plus the added weight. We just used the wood that was already there.

It is not the added space for us so much as the ability to lift the bed. I'm old and that hurts my back!
