In Texas, by law, the left lanes are for passing. It's also the law that if you have more than 5 vehicles behind you you're required to pull over to the shoulder and allow them to pass. Never mind the law, it's just common sense and courtesy.
    1) Not enough if any citations are written for those infractions
    2) there doesn't seem to be any formal Driver Education for beginning drivers any longer
    3) I believe the concept of "yield" is completely lost on too many whether they don't understand the benefits of sharing or just don't care, I don't know.
I do know it's frustrating to witness the abuse of a beautifully engineered highway system.
My dad was a Marine and had somehow found the kindness to ask my Uncle to teach me to drive or I likely wouldn't have made it to my official driving test.

No so far we have not. When the person is on their cell phone, focused on that or has tinted windows, talking to the passenger, well... No wonder insurance rates in TN are nearly double of what we were used to.

I work an odd shift and occasionally find myself on the road with oodles of these distracted drivers. My favorite was the lady eating breakfast while putting on her makeup as she was trying to drive.

Interesting read. I see most states have the "Left Lane for Passing" laws.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passing_lane
I couldn't find a Texas law on how many vehicles behind you, just stay to the right.
    http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.u...45.htm#545.051
    http://www.texashighwayman.com/laws.shtml

I've become one of those who is slow & stays over in the slow lanes, so just try to keep the other drivers off my rear end and not let them bother me(yeah right).

Also many states have the slower vehicle Turnout laws, seems to vary a bit by state, paying attention to the road signs I guess is the best bet.
Makes me wonder how many traffic laws we learn about the hard way.

Gene, I traversed through the Sierra’s today with signage for slow moving vehicles to use pullouts. There was no posting of # of vehicles behind however I believe it’s 3 or more (Ca). With that said while existing Yosemite a few years ago I slowed to safely pull into what was a long downhill pull out to find half of it scattered with rock. Needless to say we slid through the pullout and back out into traffic barely missing the last car. I’ve since stopped using downhill pullouts in the mountains, most are too short with rocks on the asphalt. Going up hill is no problem, the diesel keeps up.

Freeway travel I am following the same approach as others, middle lane through congested areas otherwise only used to pass. There are several places in Northern Ca where it’s posted for trucks to use the middle lane through congested areas.

The other challenger that exists on 2 lane freeways is trucks passing other trucks that takes 2-3 miles to complete. As another said earlier I to had a long daily commute (93 one way) and was frustrated with the challenge of others. I took to audio books to improve the ride, I went through around 60 before starting to work at home. No traffic now

I prefer the "One Bump Rule" If a vehicle is consuming space and time in the #1 lane you may give a one bump warning, if said vehicle fails to move right and therefore out of the #1 lane you may at your discretion either bump again or pit them into the median. Just a fantasy but it would cure a common complaint.

I tend to use the middle lane during heavy traffic. Leaves the left lane for faster people to pass me, leaves the right lane open for merging.

I think I remember a sign in Oregon that said 5 cars use the pullouts. In Texas my daughter was telling me about the Drive Friendly laws, essentially it is ok for you to drive on the shoulder and allow others to pass. Most of the roads have shoulders large enough to accommodate this, but you have to watch out for bridges, they tend to be a bit narrower.

I use the pull out lanes when I can, I usually get a friendly wave, a little horn tap, or blinking lights from folks that appreciate the effort.

I attempt to be courteous, but can't always do it safely. There are times when I just back things up, there is no help for it, but after all, I have the right to drive the road also.

I actually contacted Oregon's DMV (or ODOT, can't remember) a couple years ago and they said there is no longer a law requiring people to pull over if they are holding up traffic even though there are still a few signs around the state that say otherwise. VERY frustrating because I drive over the mountain passes frequently and 85% of the drivers are scared to death to drive those roads and go way under the speed limit while cars pile up behind them. And of course they make no effort whatsoever to use any of the pull outs that come up every 1/4 mile.

Thanks for checking that out. I know your frustration, I learned a long time ago you can't fix other drivers habits. When you see me on those roads you will know me because I am the one with the big RV setting in a pullout waiting for traffic to clear enough to resume.

I do the same. I don't like holding up even one car, let alone 20.
