I had looked at the wifi ranger, but the price is quite steep. You are paying for the simplification of wifi settings with their stuff. If you are comfortable configuring your home wifi router, you can consider getting a Unifi NanoRanger M2 + Ubiquiti airGateway-LR. That's a directional antenna, but those are typically the best for really pulling in a signal. There is a nice Youtube video to show you step by step how to configure it. I just bought a NanoStation M2 myself that I will wire up to a older home wifi router.

I also just got a Verizon Netgear Aircard 791L + Antenna to use as well. This device can provide a wifi hotspot, or can be a USB tether. I figure when I get to a campground, I will see which option works the best and pick that. If I ever find I need to have auto fall-over to another service, I will likely buy a wifi ranger router or something similar that will provide this service.

You have to figure out what will work best for your situation. First, you shouldn't connect directly to campground or other public WiFi as it makes hacking your equipment too easy. I use a Pepwave Surf On the Go router to connect to the campground, etc, then connect my devices to the Pepwave. The Ubiquiti M2 is a good solution for the more technically qualified, but I replaced my Pepwave 5db antenna with an after market 9db antenna. The Ubiquiti when roof mounted could pick up even more signal and can connect to my Pepwave or other router. And/or you can use a VPN to protect your devices.
Another idea is to use a cell service hotspot to provide WiFi and get a WeBoost or other cell booster to strengthen the signal. This is probably the best way to ensure internet access. If in a location that has good T-Mobile service, T-Mobile has a plan called "Binge On" that doesn't count streamed data from most partnered sources (Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, etc) against you.
Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?

I use the Pepwave as well, excellent choice; it works great, very user friendly and makes changing wi-fi sources a breeze.

Have you noticed an improvement with the 9db antenna? Which one are you using?

I got the Alfa 9db screw on antenna which directly replaces the OEM. Yes, there is a boost in performance of a bar or so, plus I can receive its signal further from my RV. This is my second Pepwave as the one I bought several years ago didn't have the newer WiFi protocols. I also got it because I can actually connect with a tablet for admin if the planets are aligned.

Thanks for the info, guess you get the best of both worlds with the upgraded antenna.

I think you'd be better served with a good directional antenna instead. Spend $30 first.

This will significantly improve your chances of pulling in a signal. 17dBi

Sure, just more effort to set up and overkill for picking up campground WiFi. Now if I were in a state/city park outside of a town with free WiFi, that would be a good addition to my quiver.
Or pick up my neighbor's cable internet and drop my DSL at home.

LOL! The longer a thread gets, the more I forget what it was about. I stand corrected.

LOL. I saw a funny signature line the other day: "Did you forget to take your meds, or did I forget to take mine?" I know what you mean brother!
