Purchasing grand design imagine
Hi grand design owners and wannabe owners,
I am looking to purchase a grand design Imagine 2150. I hear they are selling like hotcakes at this time.
Asking for some advice on whether I should try to buy directly from a dealership or wait buy an RV show. I hear you can get a really good deal at an RV show. I am located in Texas.
I also would like to buy a used one but if I can get a really good deal on a new model, I would take it.
I appreciate it

Hi, I am also in Texas, DFW area. I bought my 2150rb last September from McClains. While I think shows do offer deals, I found that, like cars, the later in the month, the more they will work with you. You will still be buying from a dealer at a show.
I love my 2150, I had found a used one nearby that I told the dealer about and for some leverage that way.

Shows deals and ordering straight can be similar or even the same. Sometimes manufacturers offer some incentives at shows and sometimes dealers offer them to customers so I won't tell you that pricing is always exactly the same. What I will tell you is ask yourself something:
Is it worth 2-4% or so to let 50k feet walk through your unit and tug, sit, push, squash, test the strength of everything etc?
Is it worth 2%-4% or so to grab a unit that has been rotting for a year on a dealers lot and lost 50% or more in depreciation because you are essentially almost 2 model years old now?
Those are the "best" deals as in easiest for anyone to get without negotiating. Not to say you can't get the same or similar, it is much harder and requires you to find a volume dealer willing to work on a small margin to move volume. Not every dealer will do that, in fact most won't. All said though you can pretty easily get around 27% off MSRP through many dealers, especially if you aren't married in your head to a particularly dealer on a brand new order.
So you have to ask yourself, is it worth it for the savings? They'd have to heavily discount a show model in excess of 30% off MSRP including freight and any bullcrap profit fees for me to consider a show unit. I wouldn't consider a year old 2017 right now as the 2019 are literally a few months away and they aren't going to discount the depreciation I'd lose.
YMMV.

If a dealer can offer you a price at a show, they can offer you the same price on the lot. We stopped going to shows last year. It cost dealers 10's of thousands of dollars to attend/staff/transport/etc. If they spend that much money to get to the show, are you really getting the best price. The money we would normally give to the show, we are putting in customer pockets in the form of discounts. Most large dealers have more units on their lot than some shows do. No parking fees, entry fees, food prices, pushy salesmen, etc. Give you home dealer a chance and think about VALUE and not just price.

I negotiated a price at a dealership a week before a show on a unit on their lot. I was guaranteed the price quoted could not and would not be beaten by the show price.
I decided to go to the show. Negotiated a price on a unit still at the factory because I didn't want the one at the show after 10,000 people had been through it. Saved myself $7,000. Same dealer, different salesperson. Sometimes you can do OK at a show.

While attending an RV show, I took a picture of the Sale Price displayed on the RV I was interested in and took the photo to a dealer near me for a new unit recently delivered to their lot. They honored the show price and were open to negotiating on extras such as second air conditioner, bedroom tv etc.

The show prices we saw at the Tampa RV show this year we did not think were all that impressive. Thought that they must have left them high for room to negotiate.

Gary - Did you happen to ask if the posted "show prices" included all shipping/prep/other fees? I did notice that the GDRV MSRP info from their website was prominently displayed in every unit. By rough calculation, the advertised show prices were about 22% +/- off the factory MSRP.

No I didn't, should have but we want to wait and give our dealer back home a shot first where we got good service if we decide to upgrade now or not.

We purchased our Imagine 2600RB back in Sept at Dixie RV in Hammond (actually Pumpkin Center Exit) Louisiana. When we went to the Dallas RV show, the show price was only a few hundred bucks less than we paid out the door for ours. I think if you are willing to travel, you might find a better deal. I know hurricane Harvey drove up the demand for RVs Texas, you would think by now that would have leveled out. Maybe it's just Texas.
