    50A Pedestal @home?

I'm fortunate that I can park my future TT behind my home. I'm adding an RV parking pad within the next two weeks and I'm thinking of adding 50A service and a cable connection (a "pedestal") near the RV.

Any inputs/lessons learned/or other tidbits I should know before talking with an electrician?

Are there different types of pedestals?

Tweety's has receptacles, but I'm looking for other options (stand, cable connection, etc). Where would I find an item like this?

    TIA...

    Hi Howard,

The receptacle is a standard electrical socket, so check Lowe's/Home Depot for possible a better price than Tweety's.

Make sure the electrician wires it as "split phase 220" with a neutral wire, and not straight 220 (2 wire plus ground).

There are also local codes - whether you bury the line or suspend it overhead. If buried, it has to be a particular kind of cable and probably encased, and it will need to be trenched a certain distance underground. If suspended to a pole, you'll need a steel suspension cable for support and will need to consider overhead clearance. I installed an outlet at our stix 'n brix (we we still had one) but, fortunately, the parking pad was at the side of the garage and I could mount an outside box on the exterior garage wall.

Hi all, I put a 50 amp receptacle inside my garage. I bought double amout of cable I needed, and used the extra to make a extension cable to reach down my driveway.
    All works well.
    Good luck.
    Safe travels to all.

I already had a 240V sub panel in the garage. It had an unused 20A 120V breaker, so I was able to install a 30A 120V RV outlet, very easily. Although it is a 30A outlet, I know that it is "protected" by a 20A breaker. I have never had a problem staying within the available 20A in the driveway, even running our one AC.

Just a thought that you may not need the expense and complication of a full 50A 240V service for parking your TT at the house.

I went with a 30A service at home too. There are only a couple of times a year I wish I had 50A service so I could run two ACs at one time. But if I start the AC early enough, one will work okay.

All--thank you very much for the inputs. I didn't know to ask about the wiring configuration, and I'm going to get a quote for both the 50A and 30A service.

We put in a 30 amp outlet at our hose also, which works just fine. Our clean out trap for the sewer is on that side also so have full hookups when were home.

Here are 2 options. It's best to have a circuit breaker in the box so you can plug and unplug with the CB OFF.

30 AMP is a 120 volt service and the 50 amp is a 220 volt service.
