50amp Male to 30amp Female Adapter

I have a Imagine 2150RB with a 30amp service, will i ever need a 50amp Male to 30amp Female Adapter? I haven't needed it in the first year, but I like to be prepared.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Back when we had our Jayco tt we had stayed at one campground, once, that only had 50a at the pedestal. Fortunately they had loner adapters available at the office. I don't know how common that is, but it did happen.

I seldom use it, but when I need it, it really comes in handy.

I used one on our previous rig which was 30amp a few times. Mostly at one of our local COE campgrounds that almost all the 30amp receptacles were slap worn out. Also once where 50 was the only option. Definitely worth having just in case.

If your trailer has a 30A panel, having one of these adapters might make sense. But, you are counting on the breaker in the trailer to limit the current through the 30A cord to 30 amps. This is actually backwards because the current limiting device should be upstream from what it is protecting. If you use one of these adapters at the post to use a 30A cord, the more commonly available 30A male to 50A female adapter should never be used at the trailer end of the cord to a trailer with a 50A panel because the 50A breaker at the post and the 50A breaker (x2) in the trailer will allow the 30A cord to be seriously overloaded.

I have one and routinely use it whenever 50A is available. The 50A outlets are not as likely to be as loose and worn as the 30A ones.

Rob was close to my thoughts. Many people obviously use this adapter successfully, However there is a dangerous failure mode to at least be aware of. If you develop a short circuit in your shore cable or anywhere before your 30A master breaker in your rig, you risk a fire due to passing 50A through a cable sized to handle only 30A safely.

Could the pigtail be wired to just one leg inside the 50 amp plug so that only current from one leg makes it to the cable?

This is the only way it can be wired. The two 50A legs cannot be combined because they are out of phase.
