Hitch recommendation

I pick up my 290bh on Friday and am wondering what everyone recommends for my situation. I have a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd diesel crew cab standard box. I have the b&w turnover in the truck just no hitch. I would love it if the Anderson Ultimate Hitch would work, I just don't know. I would love some insight.

I love the way my Andersen hitch pulls, no slop in starting or stopping. Even better that I can take it out by myself.

I use the Anderson Ultimate on my 303RLS and love it. Good turning radius and so simple to install and remove. Takes about five minutes.

I have a 2012 Chevy 2500HD with the B&W turnover and went with the B&W Companion hitch. I love the way it tows the 5th wheel, however as many have said it's heavier and not easy to get in or out of the truck bed. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably get the Anderson. Couple of reasons, one we are not full timers so leaving the Companion in the truck makes the bed of the truck un-usable for hauling stuff and two that sucker is heavy. I have to get my son's engine hoist to take it out of the truck and then it's a battle. So I guess it depends on preference and how much you'll be towing. I love the B&W, I have some friends that have the Anderson and they love it. Don't think you can go wrong on either.

We were talking about this just yesterday although the question was related to the 150 series trailer. I have been very happy with it. It is light, simple to put on and off, easy to hook up and there is no chucking. For me it's easy to line up the ball when backing. You do have to lift the trailer higher since it slides down, vs. sliding in from the rear. I recently reversed the adapter and put the ball coupler to the rear, as it seems most do with short bed trucks. That helped give the "wings" a little more turn radius and it will turn much tighter than I would like anyway. This was a very uncomfortable feeling just looking at the truck and trailer but did help. This is much tighter than you should likely ever do, due to strain and or pothole, but at least good to know it works.!! Don't get in the habit of doing this regularly, at least I don't.

A lot depends on where you tow. If you are confident that you will never need to turn or back at more than about 70 degrees and will never have to maneuver on seriously unlevel ground, a fixed hitch connection point will work in a 6 1/2 foot box. If your travels take you outside these parameters, you probably should have a sliding hitch of some type or a long box truck. There are discussions on this forum and others, by folks who thought they could stay in the safe zone and ended up damaging the back of the truck cab.

We originally pulled our 337 with a 2500 GM SB and used a rail mount Anderson, it was great hitch, quiet, easy to install / remove. I liked the fact you had options to flip the hitch and ball mount easily for better cab / bed rail clearance and the ease of height adjustment. Traded for a 3500 DRW that already had a BW turnover ball in it; came down to did I buy a rail set up (to fit the turnover ball) and keep the Anderson or buy a Companion. Ended up going with the Companion and sold the Anderson. I liked the fact that I could pull any 5th wheel with the hitch (provided they don't have an Anderson or Superglide setup) and the fact that I would not ever have to pull the Anderson adapter for someone to pull our 337. I leave the hitch in the truck 95% of the time as it isn't a daily driver (and actually think the weight helps the un-laden ride) so the portability of the Anderson is not an issue for us. There are a couple of hitching differences you need to consider; With the Anderson: the trailer has to be higher and you have to be pretty close to exactly lined up with the Anderson (downside) but once over the ball it is solid connection that it is almost impossible to accidently drop the trailer (upside). With the Companion: you don't have to be exactly lined up or even at the exact height to hook (upside) but it is possible to miss / over hook the Companion and drop the trailer (big downside).

As an owner of both, I don't think you can go wrong with either hitch.

We have a 2015 Ford 3500 Powerstroke dually pulling a 2018 375RES Solitude (ca 15,000#). The truck came with a B&W ball setup. We had an Anderson rail mount so had to buy an Anderson ball mount hitch. I love this setup. It leaves me with a flat bed. I sold the rail mount to our brother-in-law and he loves it.
