I'm short too and just got the Alltrade 647596 truck step from Amazon. Appears to be well made and works well right out of the box with no adjustments on my 265/75 16 tires. Keeps the grime off the side of the truck off the front of you!

A friend just gave us one. Thought it was silly until I used it to close the hitch on the 5th wheel. No more standing with one foot one the running board, one foot on the tire and stretching out over the bed to close the 5th wheel hitch. Quickly made room in the basement for it to live.

I keep two plastic milk crates in the bed. Use them for steps if needed and to help stabilize propane tanks on refill runs, etc. Cheap (they were given to me) and multipurpose. My hitch auto-latches and the handle sticks out far enough to stand on the ground to unlatch it for unhitching. The running boards are adequate for washing the windshield... but I'm 5'10', too (used to be an inch or so taller until age took over). The truck step seems pretty cool, though.

I ordered one a few days ago, I figured it will make it easier and safer when changing my engine mount fuel filter. Usually, I would stand on a step ladder and hope that I didn't kick it out from under me. This would have been useful when I had to replace the windshield wiper linkage on my wife's Expedition; another step ladder balancing act.

I'm 6'4" and have the Ford F-350 dually, FX-4 so the sidewalls are much taller than when I was a youngster and could reach half way across the bed of a truck. On a number of occasions I have stepped inside the wheel for the first step and then on top of the tire/wheel to get even higher up......when my 5th wheel is attached. When it's not attached I have what my wife refers to as "the old man step"......the step that's built in to the tailgate of the Ford.

I also have a cross bed tool box that I have a very hard time getting into when the 5th wheel is attached and I need to get to the DEF fluid or whatever. So, I am ordering the AMP Research bed step. It's available on Amazon for all makes of trucks. It mounts to the bottom of the truck bed and is folded up when not in use. When you need it you just flip it down. I had opportunity to see it first hand on a friends truck and thought "this is exactly what I need to get into my tool box". While this one is made for in front of the rear wheel, they also make one for behind the rear wheel.

I guess I'm a short cheap guy. I step up onto the rear tire while holding onto the side of the pickup truck bed box, to access inside the bed. Honestly, I didn't even know they made such a truck step. Cool.

Being vertically challenged I need something. So I'll try the tire step. I looked at the AMP Step for behind the running boards, while very handy, they are pricy; I'll see how the tire step works out first. I like the idea of a milk crate; I may use that just to get a foot up on the tailgate step (another challenge!).
