I have 7" and I can say there have been a couple of times that I came real close to hitting. As RVRunners said I would say 6" would be the absolute minimum but the more you can get the better. If you do any off pavement travel I would shoot for 9".

It depends on what kind of uneven ground you anticipate trying to negotiate. Six inches is my minimum. My brother-in-law boondocks with his fiver for elk hunting, etc., in northern New Mexico and Colorado. He needs a lot more clearance than I do.

Along those lines, are there significant differences between the height adjustability among the various hitch manufacturers such as B&W Companion, Reese, Andersen Ultimate Hitch, etc?

Most all hitch manufactures have multiple height adjustments. Just keep in mind you cant just adjust the hitch higher and higher to gain clearance, raising the front end of the Rv to much will move to much weight onto your rear axles and will cause significant tire wear. Ask my how i know, haha.

One other thing to keep in mind is the overall height of the trailer. I have about 7" clearance above the rails, and my total height is around 13'7". There are times when the 7" is too close for comfort, but I can't do anything about it - I have to adapt.

Someone should design a manual sliding hitch that also raises when slid back

Do you have air bags? My 375 RES really squats my 15 F350 it pulls great and feels good, minimal chucking but I did come in the other night and the lights were high,, ya know. I've not gone to the scales yet either to see how it's fairing. My helpers are just touching. After a panic stop for a Hynduai Friday night , Disc Brakes are coming sooner rather than later. I'm making a list of Mod's to accomplish whilst i'm still working, we have about 30 months before we go full time.
best strategie on keeping unit...
