It makes so much more sense to have it on a weekend. Those folks that have to work can join us without having to burn through vacation time early in the year.

Yes, the cost is $50 per rig to cover prizes, food, entertainment and reg packet. Last year at $40 we had to pass the hat to break even. Any excess funds will go to the charity we choose for the 50-50 raffle.

For those who haven't tried it, boondocking can be a little daunting. It really isn't difficult and most Grand Design units are well suited to it. The only problem is those units with a residential refrigerator. The power requirements of the fridge make it difficult to be away from shore power for several days.

The planning required for boondocking involves the three connections you have at a "full hook-up" site: water, power and sewer. For a three-day boondocking event it is easy to bring enough water and your sewer tanks should be plenty big enough to hold your waste. You won't be able to wash your car or take 3 showers a day, but with a little care you should have no problems. The third connection is power and that's where most people have to plan a bit. People who boondock regularly have extra batteries, solar chargers and generators that are sized to support their needs. If you don't have an inverter, you won't be able to run appliances that need 120V such as your TV, microwave or anything that plugs into a regular outlet. You'll still be able to use your lights, furnace, hot water heater, gas stove and refrigerator as they are designed to run on propane and/or 12V from your battery(s). What could happen is your battery may run down past the 50% charge that is the limit of safe discharge. In a pinch you can recharge your battery by hooking up to your truck and charging from the alternator, but it is better to have a friend with a generator. Since you'll have plenty of friends nearby, if you run out of battery - help is right near by.

If you should run out of water or fill your waste tanks, there are RV parks right nearby who will fill/empty them for a small fee and also fill propane tanks. At this time of year it is prohibitively expensive to get porta-potties, honey wagons and water trucks to come to the event, so we'll just rely on the local RV parks. You can also sign up at the La Posa BLM Long-Term camping area to get a 2-week pass to their dump and water stations ($40 last year).

So try your first boondocking event in this safe environment!

Would have sworn I had registered for this when it was first announced, but nope. Done now. Keith, we will be in one of the LTVAs, so we can probably be one of the early arrivers to help out. Please let us know if there are things we can help with setting up beside arriving early to claim space.

We plan to make this our first boondocking trip. Are there any special etiquette considerations with a generator?

Generally, even though it's not an established campground, there are quiet hours. 10:00 pm to 7 or 8 am for the most part.
