Allergic Reaction in Dogs - Being Prepared

We're heading out for our summer road trip next week, so we took Spring and Remi to the vet today for their annual check-ups and vaccinations. They both had great exams and a clean bill of health. As soon as we got home, Spring started wheezing. She was having a hard time catching her breath. We immediately recognized it as an allergic reaction to one of the medications. We administered Benadryl right away and rushed her back to the vet. By the time we got there, the Benadryl had already started to kick in and she was doing better. The doc gave her additional benadryl and a steroid and she is doing just fine now.
All dog owners might consider keeping Benedryl on hand in case their pups have an allergic reaction. It can save their life. Most Benadryl tablets are 25mg. The proper dosage is 1mg per pound of body weight. Of course, it can be used on humans too if they have an allergic reaction.
Now, Spring will need to sleep off her Benadryl induced nap...

Hi Jim (& Ginnie) - An allergic reaction is a scary event with a dog. They are far more tolerant to Benedryl than humans. Standard Benadryl tablets are 25 mg. The first dose for a 40 lb dog is 50 mg. Two tablets. We keep an epi pen on hand for Angel . . . had a close call with a bee sting a couple of years back.

Exact same thing happened this past week to our yorkie-poodle mix. Wondering if something changed in the vaccines.

When our Chihuahua Mocha was around 5 she had an allergic reaction to cleaning solution from a hotel bedspread, 3am I am at an all night pharmacy purchasing Benadryl. Since then we keep it on hand.

When she was 8 she stuck her nose in a Skunk Cabbage Plant while hiking. Puffed her up pretty good, Benadryl to the rescue.

Our other Chihuahua Bandit likes to catch bugs. Occasionally he will get a real spicy one, they don't seem to bother him.

When Mocha was 12 her rabies shot caused her to have an Auto Immune Reaction, her body started to fight itself. Vet gave her steroid and she pulled out of it, but that was her last rabies shot before she passed away 2 years later.

We always keep benedryl on hand. It not only is good for allergic reactions but also help sedate a dog who is noise reactive during thunder storms.

A first aid kit geared to dogs, or items in your own kit is something every dog owner should keep.

We keep it on hand as a tranq if needed for my female border collie at our vet's suggestion (she sometimes get hypervigilant when we drive). Also, my older bc had a seizure after using a cheap flea protection product, which i later found is not unusual. Just another consideration when choosing products for travelling.
