Sooner or later almost all people will be in a situation where they won’t want to (or won’t be able to) travel and/or climb stairs. It’ll be because of age or injury. Then what?

10 years ago we decided to move into a house in what was (is) a full time RV community/Resort. When deciding to live in a camper or build a house someone a lot older than me (then and now) gave me the advice above.

We built a house back then but travel - a lot. 3 to 6 months in the summer and various short trips the rest of the year (alone and in groups). We love leaving home. We LOVE getting home. We love having some personal treasures and enjoying them when we get home rather than keeping them in storage, and we enjoy the freedom of space, and we enjoy returning to our friends. Our friends enjoy returning too or seeing us come home.

So 10 years since our decision we don’t regret having a house to come home to. And we’ve watched the community age while development of more homes continues. Interestingly the newest development is homes with no RV provision. That’s for all the folks who stopped full timing and stopped traveling - because of age or inability. And equally interesting, the full timers who have done it a long time are moving onto lots with a permanent building and mostly using their campers to sleep in.

Ok. Enough rambling. Whatever you decide, set aside a big chunk of money to get yourself a permanent place to retire to after traveling; or use that chunk of money now for your eventual place of rest. At some point you will stop full timing.

Full-timing is not for everyone, though, and the last thing you want to do is convince your wife to sell her home and hit the road. If, down the road (pun intended), she's not happy, neither of you will be... especially you. Spend a lot of time reading the full-timing sections (and forums) on RV-Dreams and do the same over on the Escapees RV Club web site. Then talk about attending an RV-Dreams educational rally or an Escapees Boot Camp. She's got to be 100% in for it to work. As one of our OB/GYNs said in a meeting once, "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."

RV-dreams.com is a good place for her to see others starting to take the plunge full timing. The excitement at the seminars is high. If she doesn't catch the bug there it's probably not for her.
