Push the collar in and then push on the hose end until it clicks. Push hard!

I had the same problem until I learned to push the hose fitting in VERY HARD. The larger diameter of the fitting slides into the hole even though it appears not to fit.

Dip the end of the hose fitting in vegetable oil before connecting.

The metal of which those connectors are made is "sticky" and a little lube goes a long way.

DON'T use petroleum-based lubricants - they make the water taste funny.
