Another Rant - Don't Walk Them in the Heat of the Day!
Okay, I may be a nelipot, but that's a story for another day. My point in mentioning that is whenever I walk Duke and Nyla, I walk them barefoot. I do that because if the ground is too hot for my feet, it's too hot for the dogs paws. Especially here in the desert southwest, the sidewalk and street can become extremely hot. I have checked it with my infrared thermometer and found the asphalt to be as much as 160 degrees. And I see people walking their dogs oblivious to the suffering those poor dogs are experiencing trying to walk on that hot asphalt in the heat of the day. Walk them early morning or late afternoon! If you must walk them in the afternoon, leave YOUR shoes at home and go barefoot!

Yes, nelipot, I have never heard that term.
Our pug, Murphy, rest his soul, also had a tough time with hot pavement, and even crushed gravel. We live in the Pacific NW and don't have the heat you folks do in the south. We got some little booties we tried for him but he hated them so we just had to wait until things had cooled off enough for him and avoid crushed gravel. Mostly early morning or evening walks. Pups will do whatever you want them to do, it is up to you to make sure they are safe and sound. Good post.2018 Reflection 303RLS

Long story short, I have had moderate to severe foot issues ever since my military days (even receive VA compensation for it). Started walking the dogs barefoot about 10 years ago and was amazed how much better my feet felt. That evolved in to me just ditching the "foot coffins" unless absolutely necessary. Stores, restaurants, etc. And no, there is no "health code" violation, did the research.

Thanks John. As a youth we would often run around barefoot. Somewhere over the next 55 years I got tender footed.

If it's too hot for my bare feet, it's too hot for my fur kids. This picture is from my driveway on a summer day in Tucson Arizona.

Same goes for pushing your little ones in a stroller, they're confined in a seat and not getting a lot of air plus being close to the ground. . . . . .

Funny thing happened on the way to the forum! I guess I've become a fixture in the neighborhood, and I'm actually having an impact on those who pay attention. I was out walking Duke and Nyla this morning, barefoot of course, and an older lady stopped me to chat. She complimented me on walking the dogs barefoot as she (rightly) assumed I did it to be sure the sidewalk wasn't too hot for the fur kids. She went on to tell me how she yelled at another couple for walking their dogs in the heat of the day and told them they should "take lessons from that guy who walks his dogs barefoot every day" and went on to suggest to them that they take their shoes off and leave them with her till they're done with their walk. I thought that was kinda cool!

Don't think there's any danger that I'll ever be called a nelipot.
For me, anything above 80F is to hot to be out but but the lil critters insist when mother nature calls. When it's hot, Shy Guy is the old man and he'll always head straight for the shade so just like when it's raining, if it's to hot (really hot in my opinion) I'll let them go under the front end of my Momentum or under the slide outs.....otherwise, they're on the grass or light colored sand....anything that's cooler than asphalt or concrete.
Did I say......these two are spoiled rotten.....they are pampered pooches. They taken over our living room...
