Never had a problem pulling the release handle first. Just has been my routine. If I had done it the other way probably wouldn't have happened as the order would have been different. I have released the handle first as I'm lower the gear the trailer will come off the hitch allowing me to pull forward. I have still had pressure on the pin even with the weight starting to come off the hitch. Not easy to unlock at that point. Never had a problem but will look at my procedures in the future. Thanks for input.

Others that have changed tailgates, what about the camera? were you able to move it?

    Thanks

When I purchased one from e-trailer a few years ago, it was manufactured by Husky, and had a camera relocation kit. I went to e-trailer and they no longer offer it. Here's what they had to say:

"Most manufacturers are in the process of discontinuing their fifth wheel tailgates with the camera relocation kits due to mechanical issues."

You might have to look on some Ford forums to try and find out if there is an alternative mounting location.

The tailgate I bought was a Husky. I got it specifically for the backup camera option. It all works now but if you're not a mechanical type then the backup camera install may not be for you, it was a PITA.

I just checked Amazon and the Husky tailgates they show for sale are $700+. I only paid $399 when I bought mine in March.

Thanks Steve. No problem with installation as if I get another factory tailgate I'm going to have to move all the parts.

Not sure what way to go right now but looking at options. May just use a web for our trip next week.

I have a Husky 5th wheel hitch that is going to the dump -- it is no longer safe. On it I installed a 12/14 inch locking bolt that will catch the 5er if the jaws do not correctly engage. Can't remember the name of the place I got this from -- Bills Auto or something but he is no longer in business. After reading this thread, I think I will remove that bolt and save it for someone else. I have the Anderson hitch now.

Forgot -- there was a segment on Myth Busters on TV a number of years ago about if the airflow tailgates did any good or not. These guys proved that, not only do they not work they will decrease MPG. Has something to do with airflow from the cab creating a vacuum in the box that the stock tailgate breaks up.

Everyone has their own method, but what I do:
    - once trailer is in desired spot, place truck in neutral and let off brake for a moment (this centers king pin in hitch) place back in park
    - chock wheels
    - lower front landing gear until weight is off hitch
    - unlock and pull release handle
    - move truck

I do almost the same process as FT4NOW . . . except I reverse the first two. I chock the trailer wheels before putting the truck in neutral and releasing the truck brakes to relieve any tension on the hitch.

Just curious, what is it about the Husky tailgate that is no longer safe?

EDIT: Disregard, I misread and thought you were talking about the tailgate.

I have a Husky 5th wheel hitch that has been around for many years. It is also an EZ slide. Never had an issue with it. What is the reason you believe it is unsafe? I’m not in love with the hitch but have not replaced it due to the cost and because I don’t find any major flaws with it.

Amazing how many tail gates and bed rails that are damaged when driving through an RV park.
