DRFamily - It is important to distinguish between the Heavy Duty Payload Package (HDPP) and the Max Tow Package. The items described by Bamaman are the HDPP. Many dealers stock the Max Tow. HDPP trucks are almost always special order.

Even with the larger Imagines, you will quickly be up against the 1200 lb limit of the Class IV hitch since many have loaded hitch weights well above 10% of trailer weight. With a payload of 1620, you should probably be shopping for a trailer with a “ready to camp” hitch weight below 1000 lbs.

Here is a website that you can play with the numbers and customize them for you. Some of us including me bought a truck and a 5er then found out after the fact that our truck couldn't handle the payload

If only camping a day or two at a time, the Imagine XLS 21BHE is an awesome size. I like the simplicity and overall length for a bunkhouse unit. I grew up in a family of 5 camping in a 20-ft Kit Companion with two sets of bunks in the back. It was great for weekend camping.

See this thread for some real world numbers on hitch weights for the larger Imagines. https://www.mygrandrv.com/fo...2950rl-imagine

DRFamily - Back to your question about upgrading your F150 to a HDPP equivalent . . . The key elements are the LT (Light Truck) tires vs your Passenger tires and an additional leaf in the rear springs. This would get you most of the capability, but there are also other things like the larger rear axle and suspension tuning differences. Changing these things will not change your label 7000 lb GVWR. The HDPP version has a 7800 lb GVWR and about a 2500 lb payload.

    DRFamily,

The Imagine 3170BH is a pretty big travel trailer, and would probably put you up at the limits (if not over) for the payload and hitch receiver ratings for your F150. The Grand Design website advertises it with an unloaded weight of 7,497-lbs. and and unloaded tongue weight of 10% (749-lbs.). It's pretty easy to imagine that trailer weighing close to 8,500-lbs. in a "loaded ready-to-go-camping" condition. If you split the difference on the recommended range of 10% to 15% for tongue weight, 12.5% of 8,500-lbs. would result in a 1,063-lbs. tongue weight. Add another 75-lbs. or so for the weight distributing hitch and your getting close to the 1,200-lbs. limit of a Class IV hitch receiver. And that hitch weight plus the weight of passengers and any other gear you carry in the truck is likely going to run right up to the truck's 1,620-lbs. payload rating.

Also for "worst case" consideration, if you decided to load the trailer up to it's advertised GVWR of 9,495-lbs. and if it the cargo was arranged in the trailer in such a way as to put 15% on the tongue, then you'd be looking at 1,424-lbs. without even factoring in passengers or weight distributing hitch.

    145" Wheelbase
    3.5L V6 Ecoboost
    3.31 electronic lock RR axle
    7000 lbs GVWR package
    FX4 off-road package
    Class IV trailer hitch
    Trailer tow package

We could also do a travel trailer but I would really prefer the fifth wheel. Is there any other info needed?

thanks I really appreciate the help.
Sell the F150 and buy a F350. That’s what I did. I sold my brand new 3 month old 2016 F150 w/3.5L and bought a 2017 F350. My BIL bought it from me with the dealer doing a courtesy trade so I could not loose the tax advantage of trading.

When looking at 150s w/3.5L vs 250s with diesels I found that payload gain was only about 200 lbs. Going to a 350 diesel gave me a 3500 payload vs the 1962 payload of my F150. Now I’m happy and relaxed towing.

You won’t get killed too badly if you bought your F150 right. These trucks hold their values pretty well.
