Either wayIm looking at new hitches, has anyone had any experience with the auto slide hitches??
Before I bought my Titan I did a lot of research on various hitches including the auto slide types. I was considering a future short bed truck so I wanted something that could be converted if needed. If I may ask what unit do you have. Add it to you signature. My 220RK has the turning point hitch so I could go that way too. However with having to put the head wedge in it could hamper hitching up under some conditions. Same applies to the auto slider.

Now to you question. Look on IRV2.com and search the data base. Also look here. You will find various opinions. I found the auto sliders to be complex and two heavy for my need. There is more maintenance too. I needed something I could take apart to get it out of the truck bed. If you can, look at them in person. Also ask around the campground too.

    Hope this helps

I'm not convinced a slider hitch is required on most of the Grand Design 5th wheels. Pretty much all of them have the cap contoured back at the corners for clearance. My F-250 just had the B&W Companion hitch (no slider) and I had no clearance issues and it was a short bed. Here is a picture of it at about a 75-80 degree turn while I was checking tonneau cover clearance. I would not turn any sharper due to trailer axles looking pretty cockeyed at that point! X2 on the Pullrite Superglide for short box trucks as shared by rapid1 and noted in our signature. The hitch head is easily and quickly (10 seconds) removed by pulling a pin on each side reducing the weight by 40 or so lbs. The left to right tilt beam where the head is mounted can also come off (couple/few minuets) by removing the one mega left to right pivot bolt/nut reducing weight by another 30 or so lbs. Thus the 195 lb. hitch becomes quite manageable to take out and replace by two folks. My neighbor or Carol helps me each fall and spring and I do not remove either of the two pieces noted.

As txfivver noted many can get by w/o a slider with at least the narrow body Reflection fivers. The added 6" to the Momentums and Solitudes reduces the turn angle kissing the cab/back window factor. Yes, on a level parking lot the significant turn angle will be good for most folks. However, when encountering un-level ground or something else to tilt the fiver left or right or where the front of the truck is raised or the rear of the fiver is raised the clearance between fiver nose and truck will be reduced. These circumstances will most likely arise. It is just a matter of time and travel somewhere where the snake will bite.

It is these situations where several folks have posted pictures and/or shared details about truck body, truck rear window, and/or fiver nose damage. It becomes a decision about your propensity for risk.

I have read multiple accounts and maybe a youtube vid of Reese manual sliders unlatching after a severe stop. Someone explained the defect and what he did to prevent another failure. It did not relate to the 'polarity' of the pin bolts attaching slider to base.

MarkDeb - If you could provide a link to what you describe, I would appreciate reading the details. My "Google Search" on key words is not finding anything definitive.

    Thanks

See the comments section. I have read someone's notes on a RV forum (?) detailing their findings on this. Teaching a class atm. Will look later
