I'll talk with my tax person. He can figure out what my retirement taxes will be in Oregon. Registration is pretty low. The bike was $78.00 for 2 years. I think the Momentum was close to $300.00. The truck is $134 I think and that's 2 years too. Insurance is around $900.00 for the bike, truck and rv. And that's high end insurance.
I'd be interested in what others are paying in SD. KENBackpacker and tent camper all my life, including BSA as a kid and adult.

In regards to insurance, we had our RV insured for "purchase price" plus tax & license (which was California at that time, so high $$$$$). Have to produce your purchase order/purchase contract for that coverage.
We have read where people lost their Momentums in hurricanes, floods, propane fire, forest fire, etc. and then get the current book value, which we know drops off pretty fast. Being retired, we don't ever want to have to come out of pocket with that kind of cash (or loan) so that's why we ensured for purchase price. Of course, a "new" one would be even more.
Having said that, as you know Ken, we're full timers and so if there's the slightest hint of hurricane, forest fire, tornado, etc. we're going to be hooked up and down the road a few hundred miles and far in advance as possible. Something that many don't think about (Florida) is that they wait until a day or two before and then get caught up in all the grid-lock of all the traffic going north, gas stations out of fuel, etc. So hopefully, we've got our risks pretty well narrowed down to an accidental propane fire. And for that......I'm the guy with six fire ext. in our 376TH and a large one on the driver's side of my tool box in my truck. We had the experience of coming up on two RV fires on the side of the highway in the past year and they go up really, really fast!SOLD my 2017 Momentum 376TH being pulled by a 2014 Ford F-350 Lariat, FX-4, Crew Cab, Longbed, Dually. That would depend on your state, my state I would rather pay 4% sales tax on purchase of truck/RV than pay 4.5% income tax every year on my income. If I was able to pull it off or was full time I jump change to get out pay tax on my income. There are some tax free zones in Mexico that we looked into where you won't have to pay any taxes federal or state and just spend money on the local economy.

You might be correct Dennis. $7000 to SD or maybe $2500 a year to Oregon. KEN
What is the state sales tax in Oregon?
The Oregon (OR) sales tax rate is currently 0%. Though there is no state sales tax, Oregon was noted in Kiplinger's 2011 10 Tax-Unfriendly States for Retirees due to having one of the highest tax rates on personal income in the nation. Oregon counties and cities have the right to impose a sales tax at the local level.Backpacker and tent camper all my life, including BSA as a kid and adult.

One question - you have to sign a form that says you will make SD you residence after you stop travelling. What are the consequences if in a long number of years that you choose to make some other state your residence?

If I remember correctly, it says that you'll return to South Dakota but doesn't say to "residence". However, the wording is irrelevant. We all make decisions in life and then change our minds. I don't think there's a law against that......yet.
The Rapid City and the Black Hills area is someplace that we could/have considered living in, once we stop traveling.......who knows? We've been back twice in the past year. There really is a lot to do around there in a relatively small geographical area if you just get out and do it. We spent two months there this summer and still didn't get to do everything we had on our list.
If you workamp in the Black Hills area the Black Hills Tourist Assoc. gives all workampers a VIP pass that gets you in to all the attractions and most are free (the helicopter tour was at a discounted rate). They want you to go experience all that they have to offer so that you'll come back to your RV park and tell all of your guests. We're going to have to spend another summer workamping there to finish doing everything on that list.SOLD my 2017 Momentum 376TH being pulled by a 2014 Ford F-350 Lariat, FX-4, Crew Cab, Longbed, Dually. Only that you "intend" to. If time rolls by and you end up doing something else then I see absolutely nothing they can do about it. What you intend to do today may not happen tomorrow. It's like when you buy a new gun. You promise that you are buying it for your personal use but that doesn't mean you can't later give it away, sell it, etc. It just means at the time of purchase you intend to use it for yourself.
To be clear, I'm not advocating that anyone lie about plans for future SD residence or about buying a new gun (straw buyer - you can go to jail for that). I'm just agreeing with JCZhome that I don't see any enforceable action they could take if you change your mind later.
