upgrading studs from 1/2" to 9/16" with disc brake install

Getting with Performance Trailer Braking for the install of disc brakes. They recommend upgrading from the 7000lb to 8000lb kit which would include 9/16" studs. Would there be any issues fitting the original wheels on this stud?
    thanks all

I was going to do the same. They said they’ve never had any issues with the change and most wheels are bored to accept up to 5/8” studs. I like the stronger studs and larger bearings

The original wheels will not fit. I had to get new wheels when I up-graded axles to 8K which had the 9/16 studs.

Thanks very much warsw1 for that! I can't imagine having the thing up on 4 jack stands with the installer ready to leave, and the wheels don't fit.

Trying to find the specs for my wheels...saw this "Westlake ST235/85R16 Radial Tire w 16" Jaguar Aluminum Wheel - 8 on 6-1/2 - LR G - Black Item # LHAXSJ421" on etrailer, which *looks* similar to a Solitude wheel. These others will accept a 9/16" stud. Too bad our OEM wheels can't.
    "Specs:
    Rim dimensions: 16" diameter x 6" wide
    Bolt pattern: 8 on 6-1/2"
Wheel bolt size: 1/2"-20 or 9/16"-18

Yes....I got caught up in that exact scenario. I was told they would fit and when it was time to mount them on the new axles they found out they wouldn't. I ended up finding some steel wheels that were in specs at Discount tire. It was a race LOL

I don't remember what it is but you want to make sure you get the right offset. I have read it is important.

    RobM,

I'm in the same situation as you - getting the Performance Braking disc brakes installed in a couple of weeks at the San Antonio rally. Michael had suggested the same upgrade(s) to me and said that the OEM rims would fit the larger 9/16" studs. Since they do this all the time, I tend to believe him. Will email him and again confirm that there will be no fit issues.

Had a response from Michael, owner of Performance Braking, within 1/2 hr of emailing him. He said that they upgrade to the 9/16" studs on the majority of their installations and have had no issues (and added that GD owners have been their biggest customers this year).
He added that IF for some reason that there is an issue, that they can put new 1/2" studs in the upgraded hub/rotor and that their warehouse in Norman, OK could overnight these if not available from the installer.
Also, this is not an upgrade to to 8K axle - it is the "8,000 pound kit" which is identical to the 7,000 pound kit except that it has 9/16 inch studs which will give you a little beefier stud and a larger outer bearing...in other words, more peace of mind.

Thanks Ed. I have been emailing with "Kelly" there, and just fired off an email myself. I am on the same page as you...I am keeping the 7000 lb axles I have, and just contemplating the 8000 lb disc brake kit. I was real surprised to see that warsw1 had the fit issues, but maybe that issue was in getting a bigger axle (?). Great to hear they can retrofit the 1/2 inch studs if needed.
