What hitch adjustment height

I fell into a deal I could not refuse Friday afternoon after work. I stopped to look at a few duelly's at a dealership. I dropped a name to the general manager and he gave me almost $10,000 of the asking price and $16,000 for my 2002 F350 sight unseen.
So I am a proud new owner of a 2016 Ram Duelly crewcab long bed with only 8300 miles. It came with a Ram 25 fifth wheel hitch. The hitch is using the middle mount holes. I hitched up the Momentum to see the bed rail height and it around 6 inches.

The only ding on the truck looks like the last owner's fifth wheel touched the bed rails on both sides just a bit.

Should I raise the hitch up one notch? KEN

orbiker, I have almost the same setup and I had mine on the middle mount and it almost hit on my bed as I was pulling out of the drive and I was sitting at a down angle on the trailer. I moved mine up to the top mounting holes and have not had any close calls. Just make sure you torque the bolts.

I think most people consider 6" of clearance to be the minimum. I like to have a little more but you have to balance that with how high the nose of the RV is sitting. Congrats on the new rig!

I have 7" of clearance and I consider it barely enough. I have seen a few times where 6" would have hit.

Bed rail clearance depends on what kind of terrain you tend to navigate. I rubbed the bed rails once on paved roads where there was a big water run-off "trench" across an intersection where I was making a turn. That was with 6" of clearance (now have more than 8" with this truck). On the other hand, 8" wouldn't be enough for my brother-in-law. They boondock (think elk hunting, etc.) in New Mexico and Colorado and have had to use 4WD plus the winch on the front of the truck to get the rig out of "situations." It's critical to me, though, to have the trailer as level as possible for handling and stress on the trailer suspension system.

I raised the hitch to the top ( next ) adjustment. I'll be going camping in 3 weeks and I'll update my findings. Hopefully the Momentum will be nice and level.

Congratulations Ken! That's some low mileage for sure. What tranny and gears does it have? It looks like the Laramie edition?

This is my wife won't let me go anywhere near truck dealerships. And at the Tucson Rodeo every year they have Ram truck displays on the rodeo grounds. She drags me the other way.

At the Tampa RV show I like going by the Freight Liner Sport Chassis display. There is always some really nice F450's at the show too.
