Some towing suggestions sought - 2800bh

I have bought, but not taken delivery of a 2800BH.
I am planning on towing it with the 2016 Ford Expedition EL with heavy duty trailer tow package (9200 pounds rating, 131 inch wheel base, 220 total length, 3.5 ecoboost).
I recently acquired a 2018 f150 supercrew shortbed (7700 pounds rating, 145 inch wheel base, 230 inches overall, 2.7 ecoboost).
I am using an Equal-i-zer sway control hitch/load levelling hitch.
With the above information, what would you drive up to the dealership in next Wednesday to take delivery with?
the expedition was great towing a lighter and shorter 24 foot camper we currently have.
During our shopping, I honestly wasn't thinking anything but weight rating and both of our vehicles will technically handle the 2800BH.

You have to look at the available payload capacity of each vehicle. The towing capacity is only part of the equation. Choose the vehicle with the highest payload capacity.

From what I read, the f150 is 1950 pounds for payload. the Expedition EL is 1580 pounds for payload.

Reading the stickers on the driver’s door jamb? If not, that’s the best place for vehicle-specific info.

That would be the total weight of occupants and luggage should not exceed number, correct? For the f150 1575 and the expedition 1436.

Correct. Assuming the receivers on both are rated for the load, it looks like either one would work for taking delivery. Given the engines and ratings, it seems the Expedition would be the stronger puller but the added wheelbase on the F-150 might make it a bit more stable.

Depending on how much you pack, you might exceed the tow rating of the F-150. Both are potentially tight on payload once loaded with people and gear. That’ll be something to monitor.

As long as you have the right bars, I would go with the expedition.

I found a towing calculator at a rv site called changingears.com. entered in specs for each vehicle and tongue and weight of trailer. I used curb weight from ford for each vehicle. Other numbers provided were gvwr, gcwr, max load trailer weight, max tongue weight, rgawr.
I was surprised to see the f150 come out about 1300 pounds better than the expedition. With no safety margin, the f150 was at about 7700 pounds, while the expedition was at 5300 pounds.

Bear with me--I really messed up in this area so I tend to go overboard when writing about this subject. (The result of my "mess up" was becoming a charter member in the TwoTimeTV club here on this forum!)

That changinggears site is referenced in this post: https://www.mygrandrv.com/fo...ity-Calculator

Have you checked out the other references in that thread? If not, I encourage you to keep reading/watching until you know without a doubt that you understand the jargon. Why? Because the way I'm reading your posts the focus is on towing capacity but IMHO it should be on payload capacity. They are two completely different and distinct capabilities of a tow vehicle. My guess is both of your vehicles can tow the 2800BH, but both will be close (or over) the payload capacity (once everything is loaded "ready to camp").

For planning purposes I used 15% of a trailer's GVWR to determine tongue weight. (Probably will be less--again--for planning purposes only.) The GVWR of the 2800BH is 7995lbs, so 1200lbs is the max tongue weight you can plan on. Subtract 1200 from your available payload (by reading the sticker on the side of the driver's doorjamb) and that's what you have left for people, bikes, coolers and luggage in the vehicle.

Of course, when picking up from the dealer you shouldn't be anywhere near GVWR so you should be OK. I *assume* you'll have a weight-distribution hitch? (Sorry if that is covered earlier in this thread...)

Hope this helps...at least a little.

The hitch weight of our 2018 Imagine 2800BH, loaded up and ready to go camping, is about 1,000-lbs. Subtract that from your "should not exceed" numbers and that gives you an idea of how much capacity you'll have left for passengers and cargo in the tow vehicle.

As mentioned by @backtrack2015, you'll want to check the sticker on each of the hitch receivers to make sure they're rated for at least 1,000-lbs. weight distributing (will have a lower capacity for weight carrying).

It's always fun spending someone else's money, so you could get two separate Equal-i-zer shanks and hitch heads, one adjusted for each vehicle, and then you could try towing with both to decide which you like better.
