I'll be blunt and won't sugar-coat it: you're looking at the wrong numbers. If you get the payload capacity right there is a 99.9% chance the towing capacity will be more than enough.

At the risk of coming on too strong--use the resources in the thread I linked in my earlier post. It is imperative you understand why I (and others here) are emphasizing payload.

ok I understand what your saying so the hitch weight on a 5th wheel would be the weight so that is the weight that is in the bed of your truck

Yes! Plus the weight of the hitch itself, people, luggage, pets, bikes, generator, coolers and anything else you may want to throw in the truck. Use 25% of the trailer's GVWR for planning purposes and you'll have the tongue weight of whatever 5vr you're considering. Then add in all the other weights (as previously listed) to come up with your total payload. Based on the sticker on your truck's doorjamb, can you carry that much payload? That's the question.

Thanks for being so receptive to these inputs. As you may know I'm passionate because it cost me an extra $10K to learn this lesson. I don't want a forum member to make the same mistake!

To pull a 5er that weights in at 16,320 with 20 percent pin weight you would need 3264 plus people, hitch and stuff in the truck. Now open the door of 3/4 ton and look for that yellow sticker for the payload rating of that truck not some stripped down truck quoted on the website. What Ram does is use a 15% pin weight to achieve those numbers and at 15% the pin weight would be 2448 so within a gas 3/4 ton.
Below is what they pull to get those numbers which it lot different towing the trailer below than towing a 30 plus foot box called a 5er.

Thank you for stating this. I was going to make the same comment, but don't need to now.

I am curious about this 6.4L V8 Diesel in a Ram 2500. Never heard of that. The 1500 can be equipped with the 3.0L Eco Diesel, and I know that Nissan has a Cummins V8 diesel option in their 1/2 ton, but never heard of the V8 diesel in a Ram 2500. Something new?

    Ram does not have a V8 Diesel. For the 2500 the top is an in-line 6 (6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I-6 / 68RFE 6-speed).

    For the 3500 it is a 6.7L Cummins High-Output Turbo Diesel I-6 / AISIN 6-speed).

All great advice in this thread but I’ll toss in one additional comment. If you enjoy RV’s and likely expect to move up to bigger and better (we all do), seriously look at a fully setup 3500 DRW setup for max towing. You will never need to look at another towing calc again and can be safely assured you have enough truck most any RV you can stick behind it. At the very least add a couple to your spreadsheets and comparison notes. It’s amazing how little extra money moves you from a 2500 Diesel into a killer (towing wise) 3500 DRW Diesel.

Sounds good, be curious to see it! Might be something coming in 2020?

Cummins does have the V8 in the Nissan however. But it has no where near the capability of a loaded 3500:
