We were looking at the same trailer with similar payload (Ford Expedition). True hitch weight will likely be around 800-900lbs and with kids/dogs we would be at or over payload. We opted for a superduty and just picked up a F350 CCSB Diesel Platinum with FX4, snow plow and 5th wheel Prep the other week. Payload sticker is 3370#

BTW...if you do look at a new truck I would suggest going with a F350 as the price and driving quality is not much different but the payload is much better.

Thanks everyone! Sort of what I was thinking.

I usually buy 2 years old with low miles. It's worked well for me in the past but what I'm finding is with a 250/350 XLT I'm probably better off going new. By the time the incentives/rebates are rolled in I'm not paying much more than the used ones I'm finding with less than 40,000 miles and I have a full warranty.

Now the next thing to decide: Gas or diesel (no need to open that can of worms for the 979793473625 time. I know the pros and cons of both.)

Gas or diesel, just go with the one ton truck. The 250 and 350 have the same unloaded ride, the 350 has helper springs that engage only when loaded. This gives you more payload and I dont think there is a huge price difference. Itll really cost you if you buy that 250 and then need to trade it in short term for that 350. Just test drive both, see what you think.

After reading a couple of these threads on weight I went back and looked at the weight of my F-350 SRW. The GVW was 11,500 with the rear axle being 7,000. The truck weights were front: 5,000 and rear: 4,000. Total 9,000 ready to roll and hook the trailer up. The rear axle now has 3,000 lbs. available for pin weight, or does it? the GVW is 11,500 which means there is only 2,500 for the pin weight. That means I was overloaded, sometimes as much as 1,000 lbs. on the 2015 F-350. Also the door weight is done before extras are added and almost every Ford I have owned the "sticker" weight is 1,000 lbs. lower than the real weight. All things to consider as we travel down the road.
