HELP Needed - FW Hitching Technique
I can pretty much guess where my hitch is now since I've done it a hundred times in the past 7 months.
But the first few months I used this magnetic backup camera.
If I had a boat or a bumper pull I'd probably still use it.
I just turn it on, then reach over and stick it on the fifth wheel hitch and the screen plugs right into the dash.
I can also stick it on the rear bumper of the trailer for backing the trailer in.
When I'm done I just grab it and throw it back in the glove box.
It's called an iBall Camera, they sell them on Amazon.
Here's a couple photos from the website and one from me.
Funny thing, after I'm hitched up, the trailer doesn't even touch the camera, it gets within an 1/8".
I might be persuaded to sell it if anyone's interested PM me.

If you added another 14' on the back of your trailer do you think it would still send/receive ok, I have a 41' Momentum and have been considering a water proof back up camera, my current system refuses to get out of the truck and spot when it is raining real hard.

Its obvious the leads on your current system are backwards when it rains. Try swapping the driver and passenger and it should work in the rain.
I looked at the iball camera on Amazon; a reviewer said it didn't work on their 40' trailer. I did see they sell an extended range version for about $70 more that claims to work at the 100' range.

Interesting thread for us as we are in the same boat - new 5th wheel owners with no experience hooking up. An additional complication for us is the lack of clearance from our lowered tailgate to our rig. Coming back at any angle results in little clearance between the two. The rear bed camera isn't helping me at this point but may when I get the right mental picture of "success". We too practiced yesterday and we're able to hookup after about 15 minutes.

We have only been doing it for six months but the secret we learned was getting the 5th wheel low enough so it rides over the pullrite hitch, thus taking weight off the front jacks and as it rides up it is able to adjust to the center of the hitch and lock without being perfectly centered. When we started we had the trailer too high. Life between the DW and I much better for it as she does the backing and i do the height and centering directions

I took the advise of 1) removing rear seat center headrest, 2) using the rear view mirror, 3) establishing target on tailgate and 4) connecting tailgate target and kingpin with bed camera centerline and successfully hitched on the first try.

Spousal Unit backs the truck up while I jog the rv up/down to just a slight gap between hitch plate and pin box. She can hit it first try most of time. Takes me 3 or 4 tries. When it comes to RV's, I lost my pride years ago.
BTW, just my 2 cents, but you guys backing up with the tailgate up are dancing with the devil.Eddie, Cindy, n Maddie (our fearless Yorkie)

After hitching a few times, I accomplish the hookup in just a few minutes. I line up the king pin with a pull down loop in the center of my back seat. The hitching height is auto set with the Ground Control 3.0 and I then back under and make the hookup. I have a PullRite Superglide hitch and because of it's turntable design being at a slight angle to the trailer is not a problem. Find your visual reference points and practice. Hitching and unhitching is always done with the slides in. Safe travels.
