Domicile in one state, working full time in another

I'm looking at a possible 1-2 year work assignment in Los Angeles area. We have no interest in buying property in CA so plan to live full time in our 5er, probably bouncing around to different campgrounds. Can I claim domicile in, say South Dakota, while working full time (and spending most of our time) in CA? Thanks, -Jeff

Yes you can do that. However you will have to pay CA state taxes on your income.

California tax collectors are viscious. Those that take temporary work assignments there need to be receiving triple top dollar salary or hourly just to make up for the extra tax load you will be paying.

Yep, CA will demand that any money you earn in CA be taxed by them. Total ripoff state.

The thread in the link below was started on the Escapees forum last weekend. Looks like California can get pretty aggressive...

I would do some serious reseach since they may want you to register you vehcile and RV in Calfornia since you going to be working there and filing Californa income tax there.

Each state has their own rules. We work seasonally in Utah, we pay Utah income tax on our earnings while working in that state. Should we work more than six months they will require that we establish residence in the state and will subsequently collect Utah income tax on the rest of my retirement earnings. I guard against that.

I've heard of tax collectors being called slimy, but being called viscious--that's a first! (I'm teasing you--I'm sure you meant vicious.)

I do no know. I think either (or both) viscous and vicious could apply. Just saying ...
