There will usually be one or two males around too, but they aren't there as much. You can tell when they are about to arrive because mama and cubs get scarce real quick. Usually a few black bears will come to feed too.

How long ago did you travel the Top of the World? I'd like to take it because it's a nice shortcut between Dawson City and Tetlin. Last time I was on it with 4x4 and Bigfoot TC it was fairy rough and I wasn't sure I'd want to drag a 5th wheel over it.

We were in Stewart at the beginning of August (much like the OP is asking about), so there weren't many bear, but, while not a LOT, there were a large number of salmon. It was interesting watching the eagles diving in an having a go at the salmon, though.

We did the Top of The World highway July 2, last summer. As we approached the actual top (where the border station is) it was rainy and foggy, but the road itself really wasn't bad MOSTLY. On the US side it was worse than on the Canadian side. And all 25 rigs in our caravan made it through with no reported problems.

Canadian Provincial parks were fantastic, deep in the trees, dry, $8-$9 US per nite.

Agree with livin, most roads are fine, but the ones that aren’t will ruin your day. We paid rapt attention to warning signs, sometimes going 25 for two hours and came through unscathed. Saw several busted rigs whose drivers apparently didnt understand Canadian.

Anyone know if military Space-A is an option for leisure or does it need to be official travel to Kodiak?

Dont know about space A, had good times at Eilsen, Elmendorf, and Wainwright

Be aware, August can be the start of winter there, certainly by late September. Be prepared for rain, snow and realllly rotten roads.

Also, the RV parks there are not quite as nice as many down here in the lower 48. Often you may be in a very small site rightupagainsttherignextdoor.

I liked Skagway, Tok (pretty good RV park there), Juneau, you have to fly or take a boat into, but it's interesting there. Fairbanks was really hot when we were there (June).

EDIT: A lot of RV parks are only 30 amp (some only 20) so be prepared.

We drove down to Haines, a neat little town, plenty of bears and Fort Seward.
Ferry over to Skagway, up & over Chilicoot Pass, then beautiful drive down hiway 97 through Whistler (15% grades), ferry over to Vancouver Island, up to Campbell River & swim with the Salmon. (No kidding )

This months Trailer Life Magazine had a great article about taking a ferry (with your RV) out of Washington and traveling by ferry to Skagway. Staying a few days there then back on the ferry to Juneau staying a few days there, then the Ketchikan. You might review that article for campgrounds that are close to where you're going.

The trip looked really interesting and visited a several great places.

The Alaska Ferry System is a great way to travel. My wife and I road the Harley up to AK in 2011. We took the ferry from Haines to Juneau. 36 hours in Juneau and then to Prince Rupert. We got a cabin for the 2 nights to Prince Rupert. We also got a bunch of snack food and sodas before boarding. You can only go down to the parking area for a few minutes 3 or so times a day.

We saw RV's and large trucks on the ferry. Reservations are needed way in advance. It also not cheep.
