Best Route from little Rock, Ar To Austin, TX

We are going to Austin, Texas from Little Rock, Arkansas end of May. I was wondering what would be the best route to take. I was going to run 30 to Dallas then get on 35 toward Austin. I'm not sure of any low clearance bridges or traffic. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I 30 to I 35 bypasses any big cities. It's about 500 miles and 8 hours in a car to drive it.

We have been through that part of the country a couple of times. TX does a good job of marking the height on bridges. I have not run into any trouble with bridge height.

Traffic is another matter. Austin has horrible traffic. Coming through Dallas we were traveling mid-day on a weekend, so didn't hit any heavy traffic. Went on some toll roads. Pay by mail is a great for folks that get their mail regularly, but we sometimes don't get mail for a month or two. I went on line and found the toll road system and was able to pay my toll bill before it was sent out.

I would not hesitate to pick up 69 to 79 at Tyler and take it. There is only about a 20 mile savings, but you will lose time at traffic lights. Just depends if you like rural travel vs interstate travel. Should be an easy drive either way.

Just don't hit Austin during rush hour.

to say that Austin traffic is the pits is an understatement. Particularly I-35. I believe most of the tollways around Austin allow pay by mail. I know some in Houston do not (such as 99). Traffic between Waco and Austin will be pretty tiresome as well nearly any time of the day.

I30 to 635 bypass - to I20 - I35. From there it depends on where you are headed. Straight thru or a couple of tolls that bypass downtown Austin. 35 can be a bear , or you'll sail thru depending on what happens ahead of you.

    Thanks everybody for your input.

We are going to McKinney Falls SP which looks like it is south of Austin. I will try to see about going around and not taking 35 thru Austin.
