I'm sorry, but Dallas is not the northerly route. The real northerly route would be I-70 thru Grand Junction, Denver, Kansas City, St. Louis and then turn south thru Paducah and Nashville.

The middle route is I-40 thru Flagstaff, Albequerque, OK. City, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Atlanta and south into Florida. That's I-40 to I-65 in Nashville and I-75 south of Chattanooga. It's preferable from Northern California.

The real southerly route is so far south that it'd be very expensive to take from Northern California. It's I-10, and just getting thru Texas alone is 895 miles. It's pretty boring to me, and expect the roads in Louisiana to about beat you to death. The distances in Florida are also deceiving, as it's 425 miles from Pensacola to Tampa going the short 4 lane highway--and longer on I-10. There's still over 250 miles to South Florida from Tampa.

I live in Florida and would also advise I75. I95 is not bad north of Palm Beach County, but once you get south of there......its horrible. I would suggest taking u.s. 27. You can get on it around Ocala in N. Florida. I believe most is 4 lanes. A lot of semis travel this road so there are several large truck stops on the way. It will also take you to the FL Keys. Its a very long drive to the keys. I live between Tampa and Naples and its 6ish hours to get to Key West. If you have time find some of the fresh water springs in central Florida area and spend a few days there. Don't know if your into it, but in Kissimmee there is one of the best nudist resorts in the U.S. Cypress Cove Nudist resort, at least thats what ive been told.

Be careful around Las Cruces and El Paso. Son went to school in the area and lots of crime / unfriendly types. Friends had stuff taken from their truck bed wile getting dinner there. Good fuel stop west of Las Cruces if I remember correctly. Also in west Texas the speed limit on the interstate is very high (80 if I remember) so watch out for folks coming up on you before changing lanes. Have a safe trip

BTW - Sanibel island used to be a favorite place for my family.

X3 for taking I-75. Depending on where you're trying to get to in FL will determine your next route. WRT taking US27, I'd personally stay on I-75 all the way to the Florida Turnpike, which you'll pick up near Wildwood, FL. From there take the Turnpike to US27,which you'll pick up just south of Brampton Village, then take US27 all the way down to Hialeah, get back on the Turnpike and go as far south as you wish.

One other point: Get a SunPass for the tolls. Best $10 you'll ever spend.

x4 on taking I75 and X2 on the SunPass, as an out of stater that travels to Florida often the SunPass is the way to go.
