Heated hose and taking a shower

Ok, this is a fun one. Gone all day on adventures, come home to take a shower. Water on, adjust temp, good. Crawl in begin scrubbing, all of sudden the water gets cold (er). OMG, water heater not working? It's ok. What happens is the water sits in the heated hose and gets warm. So as you run water through the system it stays warm, until you get ground water, then it cools.

The warm water in the hose keeps the shower water temp up. When you start feeding non-warmed water through the system you get the same sensation as the hot water supply running out. It'll get your attention, but it's not a problem.

Nothing better than a nice hot shower, until it becomes a nice cold shower

This summer we could not get cold water, here west Texas. The cold water was coming out of the tap at over a hundred degree, some days it was 110, out of the cold side.

Ain't that the truth. We had a lake cabin and during the summer we would fill the hot water heater with water but not turn on the hot water heater. We would use the hot water heater water as the cold water to shower, wash dishes, rinse the kids off, water plants, and whatever else. The water coming from the well and down the water lines into the cabin would be well over 110 degrees. Last summer we went to Kerrville and the campground water was "heated" to about the same temp, turned off the hot water heater and used it to cool the "cold" water.

That's the summer version of the situation. Water hose sits out in the sun, get's good and warm. Turn on the cold water tap you get hot water???? What what, is there a problem? No, just solar warming.

It wasn't just the hose for us. We had a 250 gallon tank above ground, and it was black, so at 110 degree, all the water was hot, could not get anything cool, used lots of ice.

Turn on the propane side of the water heater--it's designed to handle this, and it is your fast recovery option. That'll keep your shower hot for the full duration. Works well if you've just done dishes and somebody needs a shower--then it's only a 15 minute wait for them. Just remember not to leave them both on when your tank is hot enough the propane shuts off and your shower's done. That said I find the water heater on electric good enough that if you just re-adjust the water when you feel the temp drop a little it works just as well, so I usually do that.

Do most use propane and electric heaters at the same time to regenerate hot water quicker?
