What I’m really asking is the likelihood of upgrading my rig to one of the 40+ ft Solitude, or better maybe an Open Range, without going to a medium duty truck or semi tractor, none of which work well as a daily driver.
Not necessarily true chemist308. Mine is a Platinum trim level FX4 4wd with every factory option available except for dual alternators (stupid inventory guy) including the dual sunroof and massaging seats and it's still 5400+ pounds of payload. I'm not willing to drive a stripper for a few hundred more pounds of payload, plenty of cushion with my setup. Shop around, you'll find what you like. I would find the trailer you love and then find the truck you love that will handle it. Talk to the fleet guys at a dealership, they're usually the truck experts.

I have a 2017 F350 Platinum (4X4, SCREW, Long Bed) that is fully loaded. Just checked the door sticker; payload is 5293.

Why would they put a bigger number on a truck that can't haul as much?

The F450's are rated to tow more total weight than an F350 due to the ginormos rear axle in the 450. The payload is always less in a 450 because the total GVW of both trucks is still 14000 pounds. So the 450 is aimed at the horse trailer crowd that don't have as much pin weight as an RV but more trailer weight.

Actually, the 2019 F450 and the F350 share the sme rear axle. Dana M300. And they have for a few years.

Actually you are correct, my mistake. The Dana M300 came out with the new body style in 2017. The 450 is only available with 4:30 gears however and has 10 lug wheels instead of 8. The brakes are bigger at 15.8 in rotors as well. I'd say either one will handle the job!

We were looking at 5th wheels a couple years ago and ask the salesman what was the weight of the 5er we were in. He said it was 22,500 and I assumed he quoted GVWR and I thought that definitely in F350 DRW territory. A little more research and I found that was the UVW and GVWR was 28,500 and the salesman said to expect 25% pin weight. He asks what truck I owned and I said F350 SRW but I know I would need an F350 DRW for this 5er. He said I would have to sign a waiver stating that I knew I was exceeding the payload on the truck before they would let me pull it off their lot.

My 2019 F-350 DRW is a 4x4 crew cab long bed Platinum Powerstroke and the payload is 5,256lbs. Our Solitude is 42' 6" long and weighs 15,500lbs with a 3,500lb hitch weight. All well within the specs of the DRW F-350. Any late model DRW F-350 can easily tow any of the Solitudes.
