I agree 100% Rob. It seems silly but especially as you get older the upright pole is really nice to have. I can have a 50 pound bundle of firewood in one arm and pull myself right up the step easily with the pole. The Ram barn door design is interesting and looks useful too. I think GM went overboard with theirs, nothing to hold onto when climbing up and waaay to many moving parts. Its so ironic how GM made fun of Ford's "man step" in commercials just a few years ago. The new body style Ford's also integrate the pole into the gate much better now. It pulls out instead of laying across the tailgate.

The GM also has a grab bar.

Ahh I missed that on the GM, good catch. Kind of odd location but if it works its all good.

I don't see being able to use the GM step if you have a trailer hitch on the truck. The Ford step works fine with a trailer hitch.

I remember when Ford began offering the tailgate step and I thought, "What a silly gimmick." Our current F150 has the tailgate step, and now I see it as a "must have" feature for any future truck as well.

Unfortunately the F150's tailgate hits the tongue jack of our Imagine, and did the same thing with our previous travel trailer. Therefore loading and unloading of our truck bed works best when not hooked to the trailer. A tailgate that can be fully opened with the trailer hooked up would be nice.

Someone should invent a "slider" TT hitch .
With my manual slider 5th wheel hitch, when I slide the hitch back, there is lots of room to open the tailgate at any angle.

When the tailgate is put all the way down on the GM you can get up to the bed like the Ram. Also by the pictures it looks like GM still has the step in the bumper on both sides to be able to get up into the bed.

You might try to find a slightly longer draw bar. That's what my brother did. Much nicer to be able to open the tailgate without worrying about hitting the tongue jack.

We really like the step and handle on the Ford and consider it a must have. I'm a pretty tall guy (6' 1") but without the step the only way I could get into the bed would be jumping to get my butt on the tailgate and then swinging my legs around. Wife at 5' 4" would need a step ladder. It seems very sturdily built. The handle is as well and is an integral part of the system.

Did you get the factory spray-in liner? I had mine done by Line-X and they sprayed the tailgate.
