Thanks for the inputs. Second part of my question was idle time, is that anything I need to be aware of? I was on one of the truck forums and someone mentioned over 10% diesel idle time and there could be problems. I’m new to the diesel world and was curious about this.

With use of DEF it's my belief that idling is not an issue like it was before.

It won't hurt to idle the engine 5 minutes while refueling. But diesels have no reason to spend any extended idle time. Cut it off and restart it when you're ready to go.

Lots of good information in the owner's manual. For my 2017 Super Duty, the owner's manual says for the 6.7L diesel (bold formatting is mine)
Under scheduled maintenance for idling
"Frequent or Extended Idling (Over 10 Minutes Per Hour of Normal Driving)"
or under "When to expect the message prompting you to change your oil" it says
Miles (km) Vehicle use and example
Normal (conditions)
7500-10000 miles (12000-16000 km)
Normal commuting with highway driving
No, or moderate, load or towing
Flat to moderately hilly roads
No extended idling
Severe (conditions)
5000-7499 miles (8000-11999 km)
Moderate to heavy load or towing
Mountainous or off-road conditions
Extended idling (200-300 hours)
Extended hot or cold operation
As to idling the engine after a hard pull (i.e. letting the engine cool), the manual says;
"SWITCHING OFF THE ENGINE- 6.7L DIESEL
Switch the ignition off.
To help prolong engine life, we recommended you allow the engine to idle for three to five minutes, especially after any of the following:
• Continuous engine speed.
• High ambient temperature.
• High GVW or GCW operation, for example heavy loads or trailers.
This allows the turbo charged engine to cool down."
Again, lots of good info in the owner's manual

Dang it, I feel kinda dumb that I didn’t look in the manual. Thanks Chris, I should have looked there. All else fails, read the book.

Brian,
I doubt the diesel would do this where most likely in the gas situation, the ECM was running a purge diagnostic on your truck when you were fueling. Folks that unintentionally leave their gas cap off will get the same diagnostic code. But no worries, as this is a type B code and will reset after four key cycles.

For me the factory remote start is your friend. When I'm towing and pull into a rest area I'll shut it right off, get out and immediately remote start it. That way it's locked and idling while I take a stroll to the rest room knowing its cooling down. If someone busts the window they still can't drive away with it and this could happen even if it wasn't running. Come back hit the start button and off we go!

I have second remote that I carry when I am on the road. When I get out and am only going to be out of the truck for a short time I lock the doors, with the engine running. That way the engine can cool down. My remote start will not work when the engine is warm, which ticks me off when it is hot and I want to cool the truck down before getting in, so I have a HOOT TRUCK.
