If the brass drift doesn't work as Jim @MidwestCamper describes, you may need to use a good quality steel drift. Sometimes, the edge of the race that you can catch with the drift is so narrow that the corner of a brass drift will keep breaking off. The race needs to come out squarely. (using the drift all around the perimeter) If you can get a temperature difference (race colder and hub warmer) this will help. I have heated the hub with a propane torch with a snowball sitting in the bearing race . . . when the snowball starts to melt, turn the hub over and work quickly with the drift and hammer .

    Rob,
The brass chipping off will happen but I'm usually reluctant to recommend a steel drift to someone that has not done this work before. Its best to dress the drift to fit the race and to back the hub up with something solid like a piece of flat steel. Once the hub is inspected for fully seated bearing cups, the hub can then be rinsed out with hot water. After de-greasing, using hot water will allow for fast evaporation and will leave the hub clean and dry. For the newbie it may be a good investment to just purchase the bearing cup tool set to be set for life. There are many ways to do this where I'm leaning toward no risk in marring the hub.

Another tool that works is a 3/8th's extension. Just keep going around in a circle moving the tool just a little bit each time when you hit it.

For the larger race the 3.180" (~80.77mm) driver was just right.
Looking at my smaller race a 2.35" or 59mm driver would be a good fit.

That sounded like the "three bears story"
If you just had a lathe you could make what you want.

LOL, I was thinking of a lathe, but told myself no you're not buying a lathe. Haven't touched one since high school shop class.
