Up sizing tires from 235/80R16 to 235/85R16 ?
Has anyone up sized their tires to 235/85R16 to take advantaged of the additional 220 pound extra Max Load capacity per tire? That would give me additional 880 pounds of capacity for not much more money. The tire is just 0.9 inches taller and 0.3 inches narrower on thread width. I don't see any reason not to do this but wondered if anyone had done this with any negative impacts. Thanks for any feedback given.

I did that size change when I went from Westlakes to Goodyear G614s. It was interesting that when I compared the two tires side by side, they were exactly the same height. There was zero difference in the inflated height.

I replaced my factory Westlake 235/80R16 G rated tires with Sailun 235/85R16 G rated tires because the 85's have a 132 load index rating vs. 129 for the 80's. That's about 330lbs more per tire. Quite a difference. Sailun told me the tires are constructed the same but the tread on the 85 is thicker. I only towed my 5th wheel 25 miles with the factory tires before I replaced them so I can't speak to any differences between the two sizes.
I couldn't find a reason to go with the 80's either...Brian & Kellie

When I got my Sailuns a few years ago the 85s were easier to find. No ill effects.

I have F rated 12 ply 85’s no issue. Any height difference is minimal and tires are better than OEM.

Going to get my Sailun's tomorrow. Stepping up from 80 to 85 was ok'd by Grand Design. Wheels are also rated for 110 PSI.

1st - I do not side with the "China Bomb" crowd. Tires made in China are fine by me.
I am on the front end of researching my next set of tires. I have looked at Goodyear, Westlake, Sailun, Carlisle, LEAO, Tow Master, and Maxxis.
Load Range G is what I will have, so that ruled a couple of these out. Price is a consideration, so my checkbook helps me make decisions. I will not put LT tires on my trailer. ST is designed for that duty, so that is what I am sticking to (this means no Goodyear G614's)
I liked what I see in reviews and specs about the Westlake LRG ST235/85R16. But, I am not having luck finding a source at a reasonable price. When I researched Westlake tires I learned that their parent company is big, way big, and they make tires under different brands too. One tire that is in the Westlake "family" is a company called LEAO. So far it is the front-runner for the direction I may go. It has the best specs of any LRG ST tire I have found and the price is very reasonable and they are available from a large online tire store with $0 shipping and $0 tax.
Here is a link to my Google Folder that has my current research in it with info about all of these brands.

I went from the 80 to 85's gained 780 lb per tire, from 3620 to 4400 per tire. I bought from etrailer.com, and they were not that much more in price from the others.
