I agree that most HD pickups can handle more weight then what is declared by the manufacturer. The problem is there is no official “safety factor” advertised, declared or spoken about from any the manufacturers. So in the event of a crash and any ensuing liability/lawsuits, one won’t get very far with a 10% (or whatever) safety factor defense because that number officialy doesn’t exist. If one exceeds the placarded weight of the truck, you are overweight period. End of discussion.

As expected the "PROVE IT" folks have come out in force.
First off.. My uncle worked for Ford as an mechanical engineer for all of his 39 year career with them, in product development.
Next.....
Of course, Ford nor any other manufacturer, will admit there is any "safety factor" being built into their specs. Simple logic denotes that if you tell someone 10K is legit, then they will assume 12K is OK as well.
IF a failure pattern does develop, the company is OFF THE HOOK for liability, as they do not want to be seen as complicit,
hence they factor in "safety margins" to mitigate their exposure.
Remember Ford's side fuel tank explosions and consequent fatalities ??
Perfect example of the lack of any advertised safety protocols !!!
As far as the fear mongers go, there IS a balance between logic, probablity, and liability.
IMHO, to swap a "suitable TV" for a measley 600 lb vehicle overload is obtuse.
But this is only my opinion, and I do not profess to have any privileged information
Michael
