We have visited Mexico a number of times.....down the Pacific coast and inland. However, we've always done it in the truck or on my motorcycle, staying in a hotel. I have to agree with BigB above.....their hospitality is second to none! It's like they can't do enough for you to make you happy. We don't stop at the boarder towns....we just keep moving until we're futher away from the boarder towns. We travel during the day and we don't go into shady neighborhoods that we don't have any business being in. We've traveled in groups with other motorcyclists and alone.....a number of times both ways. I retired in San Diego and more than once we rode over to Tecate, Mexico for lunch and then return the same day. That's the only boarder town that we have stopped in.

We have friends that go to Playa Bonita RV Park in Puerto Penasco, on the gulf of Baja California. They go down every Jan. with a group of Newmar owners. They meet at a gas station in Why, Ariz. on a given date and time and they caravan down. Playa Bonita RV is literally right on the beach....

If I remember correctly, she told us their ocean front spaces during peak season (Jan.) is $750 a month. Don't think you're going to find anywhere close to the ocean in the US for that price. She always talks about the food and the seafood. They also post a lot of pictures of jeeping up and down the beach. I guess they get to drive for hours in either direction, right on the beach.

They've invited us to go, as guests (would a Grand Design Momentum fit in among a bunch of Newmar's?). We were in Quartzsite doing the THIA by Proteng RV fire suppression installs or we would have went this past Jan.

Is it possible to get a bunch of Grand Design owners together for next winter? The month of Dec maybe??

We would consider an early December small group trip to Mexico.

I have ridden my bike down to Copper Canyon and through the Sierra Madres. Mexico away from the border is a lovely country with friendly people. OTOH, I am not as positive about solo adventures down there as I used to be, but traveling on main roads and staying in towns is generally as safe as anywhere else.

There are signs in Southern AZ warning US Citizens that it is not safe in those areas, as much as 80 miles north of the border and not too far from where you winter. I would also suggest there are some urban areas in this country that would require caution.

But everyone has their own risk/reward models and I don't fault yours.

"Violent crime, such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery, is widespread.".....is that about Mexico or the US? I don't mean to be flipant about it but it's like anywhere....we have to use some common sense. I stay out of shady neighborhoods here in the US and in Mexico. I take another precaution in Mexico....traveling only during the day and staying in high tourist areas where it's mostly US and Canadian citizens.

A lot of people that live near the boarder go across often, without fear or reservations but many Canadians also go over. Having spent my last five years working for a living in San Diego I learned that it's very common. However, further north even just 500 miles, it's not near as common and people seem to have a lot more concerns about doing so. Also, the state of Sonora....the state that Playa Bonita RV Park in Puerto Penasco is in....is not on that travel advisory.

I would say that the idea of going to Mexico for a period of time would not be for everybody just like going to a given area here in the US would not be for everybody. I mean I prefer the mountains, by far, over the desert and I know people that would never consider going to the desert and vica-versa. So going to Mexico would not be for all and may be just a few....especially the first time. But I can tell you that there are RV Tour groups that take caravans over there multiple times a year and they don't have any special tools that we wouldn't have.

I'm glad you guys have fun down there and I do hope you can continue to do so and I pray for your safety.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I might be, but here in Arizona, since you mentioned it, I can strap on a handgun, concealed or otherwise. Not so in Mexico.

I only listed the G-Rated version of what I've found as far as warnings about travel in Mexico are concerned.
The truth is, the scary stuff, the stuff that keeps me from going to Mexico, I found just by looking at local news stories from
Mexico over the past year is horrifying and nothing like the crime we have here. The gangs in LA don't chop off heads of local tourists or skin them.

If you spend 5 minutes online you can easily find recent photos and newspaper articles showing the drug cartels actions which include beheading anyone and everyone they come in contact with, tourists, police, teachers, women, and children included. Lately, they like to do this to large groups of people and line their heads up on sidewalks.
That's not the sort of thing I've ever seen here, maybe you guys have.

I apologize for putting a negative spin on this thread, I'm just sharing what I found, and the reason I am afraid to travel to Mexico and frankly afraid for any of you to do the same.

I've been to 14 countries but Mexico isn't one and may never be.

Maybe what I found is all B$ and it's like Disneyland down there, I really hope I am wrong. It would be nice to travel South for a change of scenery in the Winter.

I hear you man, it's hard to think positive about a place when you read stuff like that. But I gotta tell you that I am very disgusted with news media. They blow things way out of proportion and distort the story to the point it is very difficult to discern the truth. So who do you believe, average citizen types that spent several months down their recently or the new media who makes profits from glorifying horror and mayhem?

That's why I am thinking about taking a car trip down to check things out. But it's not just Mexico, I am in Las Vegas for an RV rally and my persec is way higher than when we were at the ski resort. Gotta keep it relative!

I have mixed feelings about traveling to Mexico. DW and I and another couple (my cousin and his wife) spent a fantastic week in Cancun a year ago and we were treated extremely well. The police on the beach with the ARs helped us to feel safe but we didn't venture from the resort and stayed on the strip there. One evening, my cousin and his wife wanted to visit a club in downtown Cancun and I told him we will not be going. So we all stayed put. The week after we returned home, a ferry boat was bombed and 14 were murdered in downtown Cancun. So we will not be back until the drug cartels are cleared out....if this ever happens.

Check out Keep Your Daydream on you tube. The spent several months in Mexico and did multiple videos from border crossing to return.
