Service trailer brake system

Tow vehicle is a 2016 2500 HD. Today the “SERVICE TRAILER BRAKE SYSTEM” message came on. Trailer was not hooked up. Has this happened to anyone?

Yes - happened to us multiple times. Sometimes weeks apart. Sometimes minutes apart.

I assumed a wiring issue, checked and checked. Never found anything

Finally took it to my dealer, they read the fault codes and replaced the module in the dash.

Were you still able to pull your trailer without any issues?

For us the message never occurred with the trailer connected and brakes always worked.

I purposely set the gain a little high, that way I KNOW and can feel the trailer braking.

This happened once last year while towing. When home, and without the trailer, it still did it. Took it to dealer and found no code errors and noted it for the file. There were no TSB's on this. With and without the trailer, operated normal. Has not done it since. I think we posted this last year here and also had a few responses.....but no real answers. So we wait for the next gremlin!

There have been issues with the dash slide switch sending a low signal to the module. If module sees signal for 30 seconds will trigger alert and disable manual slider. Brakes are supposed to continue normal operation using foot brake .
This fault can occur without trailer connected.
