Question California Handgun Laws governing High-Capacity Magazines

We've decided we'll be traveling through California in the coming months, caravanning with owners of another Reflection no less!

That being said, here's the issue...

I have a handgun that I purchased brand new last year in my home state of Texas and it came with a high-capacity magazine.

As I understand California gun laws (please correct me if I'm wrong) it is illegal to buy, sell or even possess a handgun magazine
with a capacity of more than 10 rounds, made after the year 2000.

With this in mind, I just want to clarify the following so that I am in compliance with California law:

I'm planning to purchase a 10-round magazine for my weapon and get rid of the HC mags.

The weapon will be unloaded and locked inside a hard-shelled case and kept inside the trailer.
The 10-round mag will be empty and inside a 2nd case that also contains a box of ammo.
This case will also be kept inside the trailer.

I have no interest in ''taking my chances" or hiding the HC mags.
I am only interested in being fully compliant with the law while traveling through a beautiful state.
Please refrain from making this a political rant on California or guns.

    Thanks in advance.

Without reading the actual laws, your plan seems sound. I would verify the verbiage of the actual law to be safe. Whenever im traveling through a state with strict gun regulations I will e-mail the State Police for that state and let them know I am traveling through their state with a firearm and ask what the requirements are to be compliant with their laws.

DMB, I’ve been retired for about five years now from California law enforcement, but I am aware of the new laws somewhat. You are correct about the high capacity magazines. As far as your plan to carry the gun and ten round mag, that is perfect. You will be in compliance with Ca law.

p.s. That’s one reason I left that state. Too bad, they have some beautiful areas. I still summer at one of their northern lakes though.

Why get rid of the HC mags? It would be a shame to get rid of them. Unless you are a full timing nomad can't you keep the HC mags at your home? If not there are plenty of storage spaces in the RV to tuck them away while you travel through CA.

    Just a few thoughts.

Ed - If you don't want to get rid of those mags, send me a PM and I'll give you my address so you can ship them to me. I have a safe I can store them in for you.

Just a little side note about the potential of "hiding" places for gun products in the RV, a few years back we went thru a Canadian border check in Montana and when asked if we had any firearms my husband said we had wanted to travel with one but found out Canada wouldn't allow it so we left it at home. They immediately pulled us aside and two of their officers went thru our truck and RV for over 45 minutes with a fine-tooth comb. Thankfully we hadn't decided to try to hide it so they didn't find anything. The ironic thing was that when we passed back thru the US border check in Washington they did the same thing. Guess we looked suspicious. Must have been my husband's eye twitch.

My solution to the lunacy of the gun confiscation/gun registration states:

NEVER CAMP in them. Their state government will never get my hard-earned tax dollars, either via a state campground or taxes imposed on a KOA.

I will spend my time driving WAY around them, or avoiding them completely.

I'd take the extra step and break down the gun into parts.

Do you have a firearm? No I do not.

When we travel to Canada we don't bring it at all. Only an idiot would, you have virtually no rights at the border and I don't want to be banned from going there over something stupid.

Regardless their violent crime is almost zero when compared to ours so I've never felt the need to have it. Even walking in diverse, massive cities I have never felt unsafe there. Here, it's different for many reasons, most of which fly over the heads of Americans

    Your plan is good.
You may consider mailing the HC mags to a friend for safe keeping until you get out of the West coast Crazyland.
Last year we went up the East coast from FL to Maine. When we got close to the East coast Crazyland (New York), I took my gun apart and mailed just the barrel to a buddy of mine in Ohio.
A gun without a barrel is not a gun.
I retrieved it when I visited him a month later.
